August 21, 1960 — September 3, 2026
Richard W. O'Toole, a cherished husband, father, and friend, peacefully passed away at his home on September 3, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 21, 1960, in New York, Rich was a man whose life was a testament to love, service, and adventure.
Rich was the beloved son of Richard and Penny O'Toole, who have predeceased him. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Helen, and their children, Michael (Kayla) and Melinda. Rich's legacy lives on in his three treasured grandchildren: Tyler, Alex, and Austin. He also leaves behind his sister, Deana, and a host of dear friends and extended family.
Rich's journey began in New York but took him across the world during his dedicated service in the U.S. Air Force from 1979 to 1994. After graduating from Nolan High School, he pursued further education at Park University, earning an Associate's degree that exemplified his commitment to lifelong learning.
In 1981, he married the love of his life, Helen Goldschmidt, in a beautiful ceremony in Dayton. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Rich's career was marked by his dedication to serving his community, particularly in spreading joy during the Christmas season.
An active member of the New Hope Lutheran Church and the Upham 55+ club, Rich was known for his gift of conversation and uplifting spirit. He had a knack for storytelling, offering advice, and listening, which made everyone feel like a friend.
Rich was an avid outdoorsman, finding joy in camping, fishing, and hunting, as well as riding his Harley through the open roads. His happiest moments were spent with his family and friends, making memories that will be cherished forever.
A service to celebrate Rich's life will be held at 10:00 AM at New Hope Lutheran Church in Upham, North Dakota. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Upham community organizations or clubs, in honor of Rich's generous spirit and commitment to his community.
The O'Toole family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who shared their lives with Rich and for the compassion shown during his courageous battle this past year. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
