Richard Smith

July 23, 1948 — May 13, 2026

Richard Smith, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026, in the loving embrace of his family following a courageous battle with illness. Born on July 23, 1948, in the warm and welcoming town of Pensacola, Florida, Richard was the beloved son of the late Willie Smith and Daisy Finley Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Willie Smith Jr., who have now welcomed him with open arms into eternal peace. Richard's life was a testament to service, dedication, and the quiet strength that only a few possess. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, enlisting in 1968 and dedicating thirty years to the corps. His service took him to Vietnam in 1969, where he displayed honor and bravery with Marine Aircraft Group 16 and Group Security Platoon. Richard's journey in the Marines saw him rise to the esteemed rank of Sergeant Major (E9), a testament to his leadership and commitment. As a Drill Instructor beginning in 1973 at MCRD San Diego, and later as a Chief Drill Instructor in 1979, Richard shaped the lives of countless young Marines, instilling in them the values he held dear. His final years in service were spent at Camp Pendleton, where he served as Base Sergeant Major until his retirement in 1998. After retiring from the Marines, Richard continued to make a profound impact on the lives of young people, working for 13 years as a leader of youth sports programs at Camp Pendleton until his second retirement in 2011. His passion for mentoring the next generation was evident in every game he attended and every young athlete he encouraged. Richard was also an active member of the Greater Union Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida, where he lent his skills to the sound and audio department for many years. His dedication extended beyond his church community; as a member of Civitan International, Richard helped build ramps for community members in need, always eager to lend a helping hand. Family was at the heart of Richard's life. He is survived by his loving children, Athena Jones and Richard Smith Jr., who were the pride and joy of his life. He leaves behind siblings James Smith, Lester Smith, and Brenda Smith Savage, who will forever cherish the memories of their beloved brother. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Aubrielle Rogers, Andrew Edwards, and Jordan Barnett, and two precious great-grandchildren, who will grow up with stories of their remarkable grandfather. Richard's special cousin, Linda Williamson, and his close friend, Mary Smith, will miss his calm demeanor, big smile, and the quality advice he was always ready to offer, along with the laughter and care he so freely gave. Richard's interests were simple yet profound. He found joy in spending quality time with his family, collecting movies that sparked joy and reflection, and watching sports with an enthusiasm that was contagious to those around him. A service to honor and celebrate Richard's life will be held on June 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Greater Union Baptist Church. Family, friends, and all those touched by his kindness and wisdom are welcome to join and share in remembering a man who lived a life full of purpose, love, and unwavering commitment to those he held dear. Richard Smith's legacy is one of strength, humility, and an enduring love for his family, his country, and his community. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched. May he rest in eternal peace.
