Richard Malcolm Powell, a dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, peacefully departed this world on July 30, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on May 30, 1935, in Charlotte, NC, Richard's journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and service. The son of Frank Talmage Powell and Mary Bell Garrison Powell, Richard grew up in Charlotte, where he forged a path defined by service and commitment. After completing high school and attending some college, he answered the call of duty by joining the United States Army, serving his country with honor and pride. In 1959, Richard married the love of his life, Barbara Wentz, and together they embarked on a remarkable journey that spanned 67 years. Their marriage, which began on July 18 in their hometown of Charlotte, was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Richard and Barbara built a beautiful family, raising two sons, Rick (Sheri) and Billy (Heather), and a daughter, Stephanie Kiser. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren, Crystal, Jenna, and Megan, and seven great-grandchildren, along with many cherished nieces and nephews. Professionally, Richard found fulfillment as a Payroll Supervisor at the Celanese Corporation, where he was admired for his integrity and work ethic. Beyond his career, he dedicated countless hours to his community through his involvement with Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Rock Hill, SC. A man of diverse talents and interests, he also served as an Exalted Ruler in the Elks Lodge and was a respected member of the Masons Lodge. His passion for sports led him to become a coach with the SCAA, where he influenced and inspired many young athletes. Richard's life will be celebrated at a memorial service on August 6, 2026, at 2:00 PM, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, located at 2115 Celanese Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29732. The family will receive visitors prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM. Earlier today, a private interment was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Charlotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Richard's memory to the Children at Oxford (MHCO), 600 College St, Oxford, NC 27565, an organization close to his heart. Richard Malcolm Powell leaves behind a legacy of love, warmth, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He will be profoundly missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
