February 1, 1940 — May 29, 2026

With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Richard L. Fleming, affectionately known as Dick, who departed this world on May 29, 2026, at the age of 86. Dick passed peacefully in his sleep at Silver Oak Nursing Home in Marion, Iowa, where he had been residing after a series of falls. He was surrounded by the enduring love of his family, who had become the cornerstone of his life. Born at home on February 1, 1940, in Central City, Iowa, Dick was the cherished son of Ivan L. Fleming and Ruth P. Fleming. Growing up in a large and loving family, Dick was one of six siblings, remembered fondly alongside his predeceased brothers, Dean and Buzz Fleming, and sisters, Margaret Hendrickson, Irene Betzer, and Shirley Zumbrunnen. His life was further touched by the loss of his beloved daughter, Laurie Sills, and great-granddaughters, Ellie Q. Hoffman and Melody M. Hoffman. Dick's journey through life was marked by his deep commitment to family and community. On November 19, 1960, he married the love of his life, Marcella Jerome, embarking on a partnership that would span an incredible 65 years. Together, they built a nurturing home and raised four children, including their adopted son, James King, while also welcoming a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren into their hearts. Dick was a man of the land, dedicating many years to farming and later as a cement truck driver, where he contributed to building the very foundations of his community. His hands were never idle, for they were always engaged in the work he loved, whether it was tending to the fields or working tirelessly on his cherished tractor. Yet, his greatest joy came from the laughter and play he shared with his eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the legacy of his gentle spirit and boundless love. Dick's life was a testament to the values he held dear—hard work, family, and faith. His resilience and warmth radiated through every gathering, where his laughter was infectious and his stories, a cherished tapestry woven into the fabric of his family's history. Survived by his devoted wife, Marcella, his children, Richard (Rick) Fleming, Deborah (Deb) Fordyce, and James King, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Dick leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion that will continue to inspire and guide his family for generations to come. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at Silver Oak and Lehey Funeral Home for their dedicated service and support during this difficult time. A private family service will be held to honor Dick's life and legacy, celebrating the profound impact he made on all who were fortunate to know him. In memory of Richard L. Fleming, we hold our loved ones close, cherishing the moments and memories that make life so precious. May his spirit find eternal peace, and may his love continue to surround and uplift all those he leaves behind.
