Richard John Fay
February 14, 1947 — May 20, 2026
It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we announce the passing of Richard John Fay, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to many. Born on February 14, 1947, in Boston, MA, Richard's life was a testament to service, love, and creativity. He departed this world peacefully on May 20, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his cherished family after a valiant battle with illness.
Richard was the cherished son of the late John Fay and Christine, and was preceded in death by his beloved Aunt and Godmother, Phyllis Tancredi, along with numerous aunts and uncles. His love and legacy continue through his devoted wife of 46 years, Gayla, and their children: Justin and his wife Amber, David and his wife Donna, and his daughter Lisa, whose husband Paul preceded Richard in death. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren—Katherine, Amelia, Mica, Isaac, Alexander, Dylan, and Jackson—and four great-grandchildren—Hayden, Kyron, Corbin, and Jaxson—each of whom brought immense joy to his life.
Richard is also survived by his dear sisters, Carol and her husband Bob, and Diana and her husband Rick. He is remembered fondly by his sisters-in-law, Layne Friedrichs, Sandra Johnson, Connie Crawford and her husband Louis, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who adored him.
Richard's life was marked by distinguished service and dedication. A graduate of Dorchester High, he proudly joined the Marine Corps, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant and serving in the Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Design with a minor in Architecture/Engineering. Following his graduation, Richard received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army, where he completed numerous advanced training programs and served in various esteemed capacities across the globe, including South Korea, Germany, and several locations within the United States. He concluded his military career at Camp Mabry, retiring with honor in 1996.
Even after his military retirement, Richard's commitment to service continued as he worked in the construction industry before deploying as a civilian contractor to Iraq and Afghanistan for nearly eight years. His contributions in these roles were marked by the same dedication and excellence that had defined his military service.
A man of deep faith, Richard was actively involved with the Parish and the Knights of Columbus wherever he resided. His later years were enriched by his membership in the St. Mary Catholic Church community in Lampasas and the Knights of Columbus Council 6978, where he served in various leadership roles, including Grand Knight. These communities were dear to his heart, providing him with a sense of purpose and belonging.
Richard was also a man of creativity and passion, finding joy in the arts. His interests in lighting design, sketching, painting, sculpting, and photography were well-known, and his artistic talents were a source of delight for all who knew him.
A service to honor Richard's remarkable life will be held on May 27, 2026, at 10:00 PM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 791 N Key Ave, Lampasas, TX 76550. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Mary Catholic Church, the Wounded Warriors Project, Disabled American Veterans, or a charity of your choice, to continue Richard's legacy of service and compassion.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Sneed Carnley Funeral Chapel, the members of Knights of Columbus Council 6978, nephew James Johnson for his tireless assistance, and Fr. Anthony for his spiritual guidance and love.
Richard John Fay's life was a beacon of love, service, and creativity. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Rest in peace, dear Richard, knowing that you were deeply loved and will be forever missed.
