May 25, 1942 – May 26, 2026
With profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Richard Hutchison, who left this world on May 26, 2026, at the age of 84, surrounded by the love of his family at his bedside. In his final moments, his beloved wife, June, along with four generations of his family, comforted him with the touching words from "I Will Love You Forever," a testament to the enduring love that defined his remarkable life.
Born on May 25, 1942, in Princeton, Richard was the cherished son of Anne Hutchison and Richard Hall Hutchison. From a young age, he exhibited a profound sense of duty and adventure, qualities that would see him through an extraordinary life journey.
Richard, known affectionately as Rick, was a dedicated and courageous officer in the United States Army, serving in the intelligence services. His military career took him and his first wife, Beverly Hawes, to Fort Ord, California, and later to the heart of the Cold War in Germany. Rick's experiences in Vietnam and neighboring countries were marked by unspoken challenges, which he carried with grace and dignity.
His time in Berlin, a city he held dear, proved to be the most formative of his career. Fluent in German, Rick contributed significantly to his nation's efforts during a perilous time, all while savoring moments of joy sailing with the American Yacht Club and the British Kiel Yacht Club alongside his daughter, Laura.
After retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, Rick transitioned to the private sector, working as an executive recruiter and later as a mortgage broker. However, his heart remained with his family and hobbies, which included overseas travel, flying small planes, and sky-diving. His passion for exploration and discovery was infectious, inspiring his family to see the world through his eyes.
Rick and June, his beloved partner in life, married in 1982 at Woods Memorial Church in Severna Park, Maryland, a union officiated by Rick's father. Together, they embraced the challenges and joys of a blended family, with Rick becoming a devoted stepfather to Laura, Mark, Jeff, Robert, and Mary Lynne. Their home was a haven of warmth and laughter, where colleagues and friends gathered, and where Rick's gentle strength was a guiding light through life's trials, including June's battle with cancer.
Their shared love for travel took them to places like India, Russia, and Guatemala, where they became deeply involved in supporting a family through the nonprofit Unbound. Rick's heart was as expansive as his adventures, and he was always eager to help those in need.
In later years, Rick returned to his faith, finding solace and purpose at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church. He cherished his role as a Stephen Minister and the camaraderie of the men's group, embodying the spirit of compassion and understanding.
Rick's legacy lives on through his family: his devoted wife, June; his children, Laura, Mark, Jeff, Robert, and Mary Lynne; his grandchildren, Katie, Junah, Ian, Kevin, Alexandra, Nicholas, Victoria, Mihret, Matthew, Hope, and Phillip; and his great-grandchildren, Jamie, Liam, Morgan, Kelsey, and Kieran. He is predeceased by his dear brother, Stuart Hutchison.
A celebration of Rick's extraordinary life will be held on May 30, 2026, at 2:00 PM, at Feiser Funeral Home, 302 Lincoln Way W, New Oxford, PA 17350. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Rick are invited to join in honoring his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Unbound or Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, organizations close to Rick's heart.
As we reflect on Rick's journey, we are reminded of a life lived with courage, love, and an unwavering commitment to family and community. He leaves a legacy of warmth and inspiration that will be cherished forever.
