Richard Hoagland
October 12, 1936 — May 1, 2026
Richard Hoagland, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and educator, passed away peacefully at his home on May 1, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on October 12, 1936, in Somerville, New Jersey, Richard lived a life as sweet and harmonious as the music he loved.
Richard was the beloved son of Elnora and Curran Hoagland, who instilled in him values of kindness, dedication, and a deep appreciation for the arts. He graduated from Somerville High School and continued his education at DePauw University in Indiana, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. It was this passion for music that would guide his career and touch the lives of countless students.
After proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960, Richard embarked on a teaching career that saw him become a beloved music teacher in the Middlesex School District. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, as he inspired a love of music in his students that would last a lifetime. Richard also shared his talents with the Bound Brook Community Orchestra and was an active member of the Somerset County Historical Society and the Orff-Schulwerk Association.
On July 12, 1969, Richard married the love of his life, Kathleen Saylor, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising their four children—Suzanne (Pete), Jeffrey (Theresa), Alexis (Bryan), and Kathleen (Kris)—in a home filled with laughter, music, and unwavering love. Their 56-year marriage was a testament to their deep bond and shared joy in life’s adventures.
Richard’s legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, Sabryna, Cole, Jeanel, Miranda, and Caden. He is also survived by his dear sister Joy and a large extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his precious granddaughter, Tatiana Marie, whom he now joins in eternal peace.
A private ceremony will be held to honor Richard’s remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Samaritan Hospice NJ, an organization that provided comfort and care during his final days. Donations can be made at https://www.samaritannj.org.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who remembers Richard for the remarkable man he was. They hope that he remains in your memories, as he cherished each of you deeply. As Richard often quoted George Gershwin, "Life is a lot like jazz... it's best when you improvise."
Richard Hoagland’s life was a melody of love, service, and inspiration. His kindness, laughter, and music will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
