It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard E. Thomas Jr., who departed this life on July 9, 2026, at the age of 74, after an aggressive battle with vascular dementia. Born on May 19, 1952, in the tranquil town of Barnstable, Massachusetts, Richard lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and a touch of humor that brightened the lives of all who knew him. Richard was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend. He is predeceased by his cherished wife, Wanda Thomas, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and companionship in 7 short years. He is survived by his sons, Stewart and Walker, and their wives, Megan and Camellia. Richard's legacy lives on in his three adored grandchildren, Elizabeth, Christopher, and Eloise, who were the light of his life. A proud veteran, Richard served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1972 to 1974. His commitment to service extended beyond the military as he dedicated 20 years of his career to MSAD 49, where he worked tirelessly from 1998 until his retirement in 2018. His colleagues remember him for his integrity, work ethic, and the quick wit that brought laughter to the workplace. For over half a century, Richard was an active member of the Maine Masons. His home lodge was #35 Bethlehem Lodge in Augusta, where he formed lifelong friendships and contributed to his community through this esteemed organization. Richard's unique personality was characterized by his quick wit and dark sense of humor, qualities that endeared him to many and brought joy to those around him. He had an uncanny ability to find humor in the everyday and used it to uplift others, a testament to his resilient spirit. In his final weeks, Richard was cared for with great compassion by the staff at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Long Term Care - Glenridge and the staff at Andwell Hospice care. The Thomas family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff for their unwavering dedication and support during this difficult time. In accordance with Richard's wishes, a private burial will be held to lay him to rest at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta. A celebration of life will be held at the Fairfield VFW 4:30-6:30 on Wednesday 15 July, 2026. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be available. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Richard's memory may consider making a donation to a charity of their choice, reflecting the spirit of giving that was so much a part of his life. Richard E. Thomas Jr. will be remembered for his love of family, his service to others, and the laughter he brought into the world. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy will endure in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
