It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Richard Checarter Johnson, affectionately known as "Rich" to those who knew and loved him. Richard left this world on July 3, 2026, at the age of 65, enveloped in the love and warmth of his cherished family at his home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Born on August 31, 1960, in Fayetteville, Richard was the beloved son of the late Bettie Lee Mainor and Richard Hubert Johnson. He is predeceased by his parents and his dear siblings, brothers Charlie F. Leach and Walter Mainor Jr., and sister Etta M. Hines. Despite these profound losses, Richard's life was a testament to resilience and love, as he forged a path of kindness, dedication, and service. Richard's journey began with an education at Terry Sanford High School, from which he graduated in 1978. Soon after, he answered the call of duty by serving in the United States Army and Army Reserves as a military policeman. His commitment to service extended well beyond his military career; for nearly 25 years, Richard lent his expertise and unwavering work ethic as a tire builder at Goodyear Tire & Rubber, where he was celebrated with numerous certificates for his exceptional performance. A man of deep faith, Richard was a lifelong member of John Smith Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. As a child, he sang joyfully in the Number Two Choir, and as an adult, he served faithfully on the Senior Usher Board. His dedication to his church was a reflection of his love for his community and his commitment to living a life of service. Richard was not only a devoted family man but also a committed Mason. His leadership and integrity were evidenced by his esteemed positions as Worshipful Master, King David No. 37, Deputy Grand Master of the State of North Carolina, Grand Master, Sovereign Grand Tyler, Sovereign Deputy Grandmaster, and Sovereign Grandmaster. At the time of his passing, he was a revered Supreme Council Member of the Great Nine and held the office of Grand Secretary General. In 2023, Richard married the love of his life, Rema D. Johnson, uniting their families in a bond of love and harmony. Together, they nurtured a beautiful, blended family that was the center of Richard's world. He is survived by his devoted wife, Rema, and his loving children: sons Jeremy (Tasha) Martin and John (Heather) Collins; daughters Tiffany Daniels, Crystal Malloy, Rashena Martin, Epiphany Johnson, and Lelita (Jonathan) Smith; and bonus daughter Joyce Teasley, and bonus sons Tyrone Dockery and Jamal Dockery. Richard was the proud grandfather of 20 grandchildren, each of whom he adored deeply. Richard's life was also enriched by his special relationships with his brother, Leonard Mainor, and his numerous nieces and nephews, including his cherished special niece, Barbara Allen, and special nephew, Mickey Hines. His close friends, Alonzo Melvin—who was like a brother—Johnny Brewington, Anthony Humphrey, and James Malloy, were steadfast companions who shared in his joys and journeys. A passionate sports enthusiast, Richard was a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys, a testament to his loyalty and dedication. His legacy of love, integrity, and service will be cherished by all who knew him. A celebration of Richard's remarkable life will be held at John Smith Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, with details to be announced by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard's honor to his beloved church. Richard Checarter Johnson lived a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering faith. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide his family and community. He will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched.
