In Loving Memory

Richard Burke
July 31, 1961 — September 15, 2026
Richard Burke, affectionately known as "Ricky," was born on July 31, 1961, in Syracuse, New York. He peacefully fell asleep in death on September 15, 2026, at his home.
Born to LeRoy Burke and Mather (Smith) Burke, Richard was a beloved member of a large and loving family. Preceding him in death were his devoted wife, Alice (Torrence) Burke, his caring sisters, Mary Ann Jones and Alfreda Burke, and his cherished brother, Bruce Smith. Richard was rooted deeply in Syracuse, where his life's journey began.
Richard is survived by his sisters, Lorraine Elijah of Binghamton, New York, and Jackie (Burke) Canada of Syracuse. His brothers, Michael (Rose) Burke, Tyrone Burke (Antonette), and Raymond Burke, along with his daughters, Leslie Torrence and Erika Griswold, will continue to carry forward his legacy. A special bond was shared with his niece, Lisa Cruz, of Syracuse. Richard's family extends to his aunt Laura Smith, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, several grandchildren and friends who were blessed to know him.
Educated in the Syracuse City School District, Richard spent his life working as a handyman and laborer, tirelessly helping those around him. Known as a "Gentle Giant," he was a quiet presence at family gatherings, where his keen sense of humor would occasionally shine through, bringing joy to those he loved.
Richard's heart was expansive, offering assistance to many, especially the elderly, by providing transportation for shopping and medical appointments. His kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on the community, and he will be remembered for his unwavering support and friendship.
Family and friends will be gathering to celebrate Richard's life on September 24, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the A. Dewitt Memorial Funeral Home, located at 4612 S Salina Street, Syracuse, NY 13205.
A brief prayer and comments will be made by Michael Burke followed by a reception from (2-6 pm) at Valley American Legion, 110 Academy Street
The family leaves a message of love and hope: "Ricky, we will miss you so very much. We will always love you in our hearts and minds. You are resting in God's memory. One day He promises to call all those out from the memorial tombs back to life. (John 5:28,29) Until that day, you will rest."
As we reflect on Richard's life, we find comfort in the memories he leaves behind and the promise of reunion. His gentle spirit will forever remain in our hearts. The family wishes to thank all who have been supporting us since his passing.
