Richard Blatman

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Blatman, a beloved son, brother, partner, and friend, who departed this world on July 29, 2026, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born on May 12, 1964, in Yakima, Washington, Richard's life was a testament to the power of humor, compassion, and a relentless quest for adventure. Richard was the cherished son of Ronald and Betty Blatman, who preceded him in death, as did his siblings Mike and Karen. He leaves behind his devoted brothers, Scott and Mark Blatman, and his long-time domestic partner, Gerald, who shared countless cherished moments with him, although they were never legally married. Graduating from Lakes High School in 1978, Richard chose a path of service and exploration over traditional academia. He joined the Peace Corps, which took him to Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It was in these vibrant lands that he discovered his passion for documentary filmmaking—a passion that would define his career. Richard's work not only captured the beauty and struggles of the world but also educated and inspired many. His dedication extended to teaching, where he shared his skills and insights at Bates Technical College in Tacoma, Washington. In his personal life, Richard was known for his infectious humor and his ability to bring joy to those around him. Whether in a classroom, on a film set, or amongst friends, he was always the funniest person in the room, never needing to try to elicit a smile. His warmth and kindness were as boundless as his laughter. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard was a man of diverse passions. He was an avid fisherman, spending countless hours in the embrace of nature, casting lines into Washington's serene waters. A member of the Tacoma Rifleman Club, he enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts, finding joy in the sport even if he never took home a trophy. Richard's life was a mosaic of interests, from his love for films to hiking in the great outdoors. Yet, amidst these activities, he always made time for those he loved, offering his support and humor to family and friends alike. A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Richard's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Richard's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization close to his heart. The Blatman family extends a million thank you's to the staff at Tacoma Mary Bridge Hospital for their unwavering support and prayers for peace during Richard's valiant battle. Richard Blatman will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the light and laughter he brought into the world. His legacy endures in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
