Richard Allen

August 31, 1938 — August 19, 2026

Richard L. C. Allen, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully departed this world on August 19, 2026, at Putnam Ridge Nursing Home. Born on August 31, 1938, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Richard was the cherished son of Mageline "Mary" Allen and Alvin Parson. He was predeceased by his dear sisters Marily (Lynn) Allen and Phyllis Johnson, his mother Mary, and his father Alvin. Richard was a man of many talents and boundless generosity. A true "jack of all trades," he spent his life building homes and touching countless lives through his work in home renovation. His career culminated in his role as a carpenter with the Urban Home Ownership Corporation, a job he loved despite his playful grumbling about the "lazy workers." A proud veteran, Richard served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1957, achieving the rank of Fireman, where he diligently operated and maintained shipboard machinery. After his service, he returned to his community with the same spirit of dedication and service. Richard was a devoted member of the New York City Church of Christ, where he found spiritual renewal and was baptized on July 1, 2018, at the age of 80. His faith was evident in his actions; he was always ready to lend a hand, whether it was moving equipment or simply offering a kind word. His kindness and warmth left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Beyond his professional and spiritual endeavors, Richard was a man of diverse interests. He loved fishing, bowling, and chess and was an avid reader and puzzle enthusiast. Whether playing horseshoes, dominos, spades, or pool, he enjoyed friendly competition and camaraderie. Richard also had a deep love for football and swimming, often sharing these passions with family and friends. Richard's legacy lives on through his children: Richard Allen, Wanda (Michael) Howard, Richard (Francine) Brown, Sheerre Brown, Geneva (Jeffrey) Mcallister, Aisha Bonets, Omar Bonets, and Andre Bonets. He was a proud grandfather to Syreeta, Kareem, Zimmy, Brandon, Sean, Richard (Richie), Richard (CJ), Richana, and Demetrius (DJ) and was further blessed with four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving siblings, Joyce Watford, Shirley Spurill, and Judy Green. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Putnam Ridge Nursing Home, Montrose VA Hospital, Plaza at Clover Lake, Montrose Assisted Living Facility, and his church family for their unwavering support and care during Richard’s final days. Your kindness and prayers gave comfort and strength, enriching his life in countless ways. Richard Allen's life was a tapestry of love, service, and joy. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and a community forever touched by his presence.
