In Loving Memory

Rhodus Johnson
November 26, 1942 — February 2, 2026
It is with heavy hearts yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Rhodus Johnson, who departed this world peacefully on February 2, 2026, in his care facility. Born in the close-knit community of Independence, Louisiana, on November 26, 1942, Rhodus was a beacon of warmth and joy whose light touched everyone he encountered.
Rhodus was the cherished son of the late Henry and Louella Butler Johnson, who instilled in him the values of kindness and generosity that became the hallmarks of his life. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Sylvia D. Johnson, with whom he shared a remarkable partnership of over 50 years; they married on December 24, 1963, in Santa Clara, California. Together, they raised two wonderful children and built a home filled with laughter and enduring love.
Rhodus graduated from Saint Helena High School in Greensburg, Louisiana, where he formed lifelong friendships and cultivated a love for learning. He moved to San Jose, California, where he dedicated his career to the safety and well-being of children as a crossing guard for the San Jose School District. His presence at the crosswalk was a comforting sight for countless students and parents, as he guided them with his trademark quick wit and warm smile.
His kindness was boundless, and his laughter infectious. Rhodus had an unmatched ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued, often with a well-timed joke or a simple gesture of generosity. He was an avid photographer and videographer, capturing the beauty of everyday moments and preserving precious memories for those he loved. His images and films are a testament to the joy and beauty he saw in life.
Rhodus's love for his family was paramount, and he cherished every opportunity to visit his roots in Louisiana, where he enjoyed spending time with his beloved mother, Louella, and extended family. His heart was as expansive as his family tree, which includes his surviving daughter, Iris Johnson, and his dear siblings: brothers Cecil Johnson (and sister-in-law Carolyn Johnson) and Earl Johnson, as well as sisters Rosemary Johnson, Ruth Johnson Edwards (and brother-in-law Kenneth Edwards), Edwina Johnson, Joanne Nichols, and Bobbie Johnson. He also leaves behind one loving aunt, Lorena Williams, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends who will miss him dearly.
Rhodus was predeceased by his twin sister, Mattie Johnson, his sister Janice Nichols, and his beloved son, Anthony Ray Johnson. Though they are no longer with us, their spirits lived on in Rhodus's stories and the love he carried for them.
As we bid farewell to Rhodus, we remember a man whose life was a testament to love, laughter, and unwavering kindness. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to call him family and friend.
A celebration of Rhodus's life will be held at a later date, where stories and memories will be shared in honor of the remarkable man he was. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his memory to a charity of choice, continuing his legacy of giving and compassion.
