July 3, 1947 — April 25, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Rex Lee Merritt, who left this world on April 25, 2026, at the age of 78. Rex's final moments were spent in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the love and warmth that defined his life. Born on July 3, 1947, in the charming town of Wendell, Idaho, Rex was a cherished son to Frank Earl Merritt and Hannah Marguerite Merritt. He was the third of five siblings, and though predeceased by his parents and his beloved brothers Floyd and Marvin, Rex's legacy endures through his surviving siblings: brothers Larry and Clell, and sister Rita, who shared countless cherished memories with him. Rex's life was a testament to service, dedication, and joy. Answering the call of duty, he served his country with honor in the US Navy from 1969 to 1973. Upon returning to civilian life, Rex embarked on a fulfilling career with the Union Pacific Railroad, where he began as a clerk and rose to the role of engineer. His colleagues remember him not only for his exemplary work ethic but also for his quick wit and warm smile, which could brighten any day. A man of the outdoors, Rex was an avid fisherman and an ardent lover of nature. Whether casting a line into a tranquil stream or hiking rugged trails, he found peace and joy in the natural world—a passion he eagerly shared with his family and friends. Rex's greatest pride and joy were his children: Rex Jr., Kevin, and Leslie. He found immense happiness in watching his family grow, and he was the proud grandfather to six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, each a testament to the enduring love and values he instilled. Known for his kindness and generosity, Rex had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. He was ever ready with a joke to lighten the mood, and his warm presence was a balm to those who were fortunate enough to know him. His life was a shining example of how laughter and love can touch the lives of many. A celebration of Rex's life will be held on May 8, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Demaray Funeral Chapel, located at 737 Main Street, Gooding, Idaho. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor and remember a remarkable man whose warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Rex's memory to a charity of your choice, continuing his legacy of generosity and compassion. As we say goodbye to Rex, we do so with hearts full of love and gratitude for the lessons he taught us and the joy he brought to our lives. He will be dearly missed but forever remembered by all those he touched with his gentle spirit and unwavering kindness.
