Reverend Robert J Haskell
April 12, 1937 — June 6, 2026
Reverend Robert J. Haskell, a cherished pastor, devoted family man, and esteemed Navy veteran, peacefully departed this life on June 6, 2026, at his home. Born on April 12, 1937, in the quaint town of McCormick, South Carolina, he lived a life of unwavering faith, profound love, and committed service to his community and country.
Robert was the beloved son of James and Carrie T. Haskell and was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Timothy Haskell, and his sister, Mamie Lee Harrison Gilchrist. He is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Varrie, whose partnership and love were the cornerstone of his life. Reverend Haskell's legacy lives on through his children: daughters Linda Devaux of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Ava Guy (David) of Hinesville, Georgia; Anita Green and Shalethia Fuller, both of Augusta, Georgia; and Sameelya Grant Haskell of the home. His sons, Brian Haskell (Hanni) of Frankfort, Germany; Craig Haskell (Michele) of Social Circle, Georgia; and Terrill Fuller (Kim) of Simpsonville, South Carolina, carry forward his values of integrity and compassion.
Robert was a guiding light to his siblings, sisters Carrie Freeman of Florence, South Carolina, and Verda Mursier of Plum Branch, South Carolina; brothers Curtis Haskell (Margaret), Roosevelt Haskell, and Willie Haskell, all residing in Augusta, Georgia. He also leaves behind a loving extended family of in-laws, including Sadie Fuller of Edgefield, South Carolina, and Jackie Alford, William Gunter Jr (Amy), Ryan Gunter, and Tracy Gunter, all from Georgia. His 20 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he cherished each moment spent with them. Additionally, he was a guiding presence to his 4 Godchildren and a beloved uncle, cousin, and friend to many.
Reverend Haskell's life was one of service and dedication. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1955, embarking on a distinguished career that saw him rise to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. As a recruiting officer in Macon, Georgia, he was instrumental in shaping the futures of countless young men and women, retiring with an honorable discharge in 1974.
Following his military service, Robert transitioned to a successful career in business, working as a field manager with Columbia Nitrogen before becoming the proud owner and operator of Haskell's Furniture and Appliances in McCormick, South Carolina. His entrepreneurial spirit was matched only by his commitment to his community.
Robert's true calling, however, was in his spiritual leadership. After obtaining his preaching license under Pastor Mark Adams, he joined Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, where he was elected assistant pastor in 1977. His dedication and faith led to his election as senior pastor in 1992, a role he fulfilled with grace and compassion until his retirement in 2013. Reverend Haskell's influence extended beyond his congregation, serving as Vice-Moderator and later as Moderator of the Simmon Ridge Samaritan Baptist Association and Union #3.
Throughout his life, Reverend Haskell exemplified the virtues of faith, love, and service. His retirement celebration in January 2014 saw him honored as Pastor Emeritus, a testament to his enduring impact on the lives of those he touched.
As we bid farewell to Reverend Robert J. Haskell, we celebrate a life well-lived, a life of service, and a life of love. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. May he rest in eternal peace, embraced by the boundless love of God.
