Rev. James Walters

Reverend James Walters, a devoted pastor and cherished friend, passed away unexpectedly on September 11, 2026, at the age of 42. Born in the warm embrace of Palm Springs, CA, on May 6, 1984, James grew up surrounded by the love of his parents, Douglas Walters and Jane White. His life was a testament to faith, friendship, and the joy of simple pleasures. James was a man of deep conviction and boundless compassion, dedicating his life to the service of others. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Religion from Liberty University in 2016, he went on to complete a Master of Divinity at Asbury Seminary in 2022. His spiritual journey led him to serve as pastor at the Avon and Glen Allen Methodist churches, where his sermons touched the hearts of many, offering solace and guidance. Previously, he ministered to the congregations of Carson, Good Hope, and Lone Star Methodist churches, leaving an indelible mark on each community with his wisdom and warmth. Before his calling to the ministry, James found joy in simpler vocations, working at The Grand Theater in Hattiesburg, MS, and the Marion Theater in Columbia, MS. These experiences enriched his understanding of life and the diverse tapestry of human stories. Among his many talents, James was an avid leather crafter and knife maker, pouring his creativity and skill into each piece he crafted. He found peace in these pursuits, often accompanied by Gracie, his beloved feline companion. James’ life was also filled with the love and support of his surviving family: his mother, Jane White, residing in Jackson, MS; his father, Douglas Walters, of Henderson, NV; his maternal grandmother, Janet Walters, also of Nevada; and his stepfather, Tim (Lisa) Thornburgh, of Columbia, MS. His best friend, Charlie (Amanda) Laird of Columbia, MS, stood by his side through life's joys and challenges. James was predeceased by his brother, Richard Weedman, his paternal grandfather, Charles Walters, and his maternal grandparents, Jesse and Weedman. Their memories were cherished by him, and he is now reunited with them in peace. A service celebrating James' life will be held on September 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, located on 2nd Street in Columbia, MS. Following the service, interment will take place at Richland Creek Church of God in Foxworth, MS. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a charity of one's choice, honoring James' spirit of generosity and care for others. As we bid farewell to James, we remember his gentle spirit and unwavering faith. Though he has departed from this world, his legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire those who knew him.
