In Loving Memory

Retha Lee Harley
May 26, 1945 — October 19, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Retha Harley, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, on October 19, 2026. Born on May 26, 1945, in Tennessee, Retha was a cherished member of her community and family, whose grace and compassion touched the lives of many.
Retha was the daughter of the late George and Alice Benson, whose love and values she carried forward throughout her life. A dedicated sister, she is predeceased by her sister, Willie Mae Irving, and leaves behind her loving sister, Bernice Blakley.
Retha was a proud graduate of East St. Louis Senior High, class of 1964. Driven by her ambition, she pursued further education in business school, which laid the groundwork for her professional life. Though her professional career outside the home was brief, her work within her family and community was profound and lasting.
A devoted mother, Retha's legacy lives on through her children: her daughter LanTanya (Arthur) Johnson, and sons Verell (Gay) Harley, Duerell Harley, and Derrick Harley. Her nurturing spirit also flourished in her role as a grandmother to Lakeisha Johnson, Gabriella Harley, Areda (Michael) McIntosh, and Arthur (Bridgett) Johnson, and as a great-grandmother to Yakim, Moriya, and Thomas, among others. Her love and wisdom will forever guide them.
Retha was a faithful member of the Saint Mark Church of God in Christ and later, the Parkside House of Prayer, where she worshipped for over two decades. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing her with strength and solace.
In her leisure time, Retha found joy and creativity through sewing, a skill she honed with love and precision. She also delighted in the simple pleasure of solving puzzles, a testament to her sharp mind and enduring patience.
A celebration of Retha's life will be held on October 29, 2026, at the Teat Chapel, located at 10419 Lincoln Trail, Fairview Heights, IL 62208. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a life well-lived and to share in the cherished memories she leaves behind.
Retha Harley will be dearly missed but her legacy of love, kindness, and faith will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her.
