It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Renee Charise Gailes, a cherished soul who left us on July 9, 2026, at the age of 57. Renee passed away peacefully in her bed in the intensive care unit after a courageous eight-month battle with breast cancer. Her strength and grace throughout her illness were a testament to her indomitable spirit.

A devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend, Renee is survived by her loving husband, Gerard A. Gailes. She leaves behind her beloved children, Susie Swanson and Rashawn Javon Sorrells, who were the pride and joy of her life. Renee's legacy of love and compassion also lives on through her brothers, Jason Powell Sr. and Roy Lee Morton, and her sister, Shaunte Monique Welborne; and her mother Linda Susan Morton. She was a cherished aunt to her nieces Danielle Morton Crummie, Shanita Barnes, Iesha Barnes; Keiana Barnes, and Ayanna Patterson ; and nephew Jason Powell Jr.
Renee was also blessed with four wonderful grandchildren who will carry her memory in their hearts.
In her professional life, Renee was known for her dedication and excellence. However, it was her personal relationships that she held most dear. Her home was always open, and she welcomed friends and family with open arms, creating a space filled with laughter, warmth, and love.
Renee's family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Onslow Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care. "Forever grateful for the momentous effort the doctors and technicians put into treating the condition of our loved one."
In honor of Renee's life and her love for children, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in her memory.
A private funeral ceremony will be held to celebrate Renee's life and the profound impact she had on those who knew her. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, and she will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
