October 21, 1950 — May 9, 2026

Remembering Sharon Elaine Johnson-Broadnax October 21, 1950 – May 9, 2026 A beacon of faith and love, Sharon Elaine Johnson-Broadnax, gracefully transitioned into eternal peace on May 9, 2026, in Conyers, Georgia, at the age of 75. Born on October 21, 1950, in Memphis, Tennessee, Sharon was a cherished daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend whose life was a testament to resilience, devotion, and unwavering faith. Sharon was the beloved daughter of Ernestine Johnson and Joseph Brooks, who welcomed her into a world she would illuminate with her compassionate spirit. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, alongside her siblings Lana Laverne, Debra Denise, Reginald Anthony, and Patricia Ann Johnson, Sharon cultivated bonds that would transcend time and distance. Her protective nature and dedication to family were evident to all who knew her, and she consistently reminded her loved ones of their worth and the depth of her love. A woman of profound faith, Sharon’s journey with the Lord began at a young age. Her spiritual path was enriched by her active participation in church communities, starting with Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Carbondale, Illinois, where her soulful voice graced the choir. Her faith journey continued with New Zion Church, where she found solace and companionship among her fellow congregants. Sharon’s faith was the bedrock of her life, and her prayers—steadfast through trials and triumphs—offered comfort and strength to those around her. Sharon’s life was marked by courage and perseverance. She faced the heartache of losing her son, Fredrick Anthony Johnson, as an infant, and yet she continued to embrace life with resilience. Her move from Brooklyn to Carbondale was a courageous step towards a brighter future for her children. It was in Carbondale that she met and married James Landon Broadnax, with whom she welcomed their son, Christopher Landon Broadnax, in 1975. For over 25 years, Sharon worked diligently as a cook in the dining hall at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She found joy in providing for her family and cherished the friendships she formed within her community. Her love extended beyond her family to include a host of church members and friends, whom she loved dearly. Sharon was particularly grateful for the guidance of her Spiritual God Mother, Mrs. Miller, whom she admired deeply. Sharon’s life was enriched by her many passions and talents. Whether through her culinary creations, her artistic endeavors in painting and crafting, or her love for music and dance, Sharon expressed her joyful spirit in every aspect of life. She was an avid reader, often found with a dictionary or encyclopedia in hand, and she imparted this love of learning to her siblings and grandchildren. Her vibrant personality and sense of style were unmistakable. Sharon relished in dressing up and adorning herself with jewelry, a reflection of the radiant and beautiful spirit she embodied. Her presence was a source of comfort, her intelligence and loyalty a guiding light for her family and friends. Sharon’s journey in life took her from Memphis to Brooklyn, Carbondale, St. Louis, and finally Conyers, Georgia, where she lived near her son Christopher. Throughout her life, she remained a loving and devoted mother to Tonia Denise Johnson and Christopher, a cherished sister to her surviving siblings, and a beloved grandmother to six grandchildren: Jaylend Glispie, Ta'tim Glispie, Tamara Parson, Ryan Broadnax, Ca'Laijah (James) Wright, and Tyler Broadnax, as well as many great-grandchildren. Preceded in spirit by her parents, her beloved husband James, her sons Fredrick and Romell, her brother Reginald, and her grandchildren Christionna, Christopher Jr., and RyZhion, Sharon’s legacy of love and faith will continue to inspire those she leaves behind. As we mourn Sharon’s passing, we celebrate the extraordinary life she lived. In her memory, may we find peace and comfort, carrying forward her lessons of love, kindness, and unwavering faith. Sharon Elaine Johnson-Broadnax will forever be remembered as a woman of strength and grace, whose love touched the hearts of all who knew her. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the love and support received during this difficult time.
