Rebecca Cauthen Leaphart
May 2, 1932 — October 14, 2025
Rebecca Cauthen Leaphart, a beacon of love, compassion, and faith, peacefully departed this world on October 14, 2025, at the age of 93. Surrounded by her family, she left behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her. Born on May 2, 1932, in Lincolnton, North Carolina, Rebecca was the beloved daughter of Reverends McKitcha and Marion Peterson Cauthen.
Growing up in a large, warm-hearted family, Rebecca was blessed with nine siblings, all of whom she dearly loved and who have predeceased her: William, Minas, Catherine, Stella, Rev. Jacob, Ezekiel, Virginia, Cleveland, and Martha. Her journey was closely intertwined with her surviving sisters, Rosa C. Leftridge and Patricia C. Jones, and her sisters-in-law, Elizabeth, Delois, and Rose Cauthen. The bond they shared was a testament to the strength of family, providing her with lifelong companionship and love.
Rebecca's early years were spent in the embrace of her Southern roots, attending public schools in North and South Carolina before moving to Washington, D.C. There, she graduated with honors from Cardozo High School, and later, she pursued higher education at Miner Teachers College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1976 from what would become the University of the District of Columbia. Education was not just a pursuit for Rebecca; it was a stepping stone that allowed her to touch countless lives.
Her professional path led her to Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., where she dedicated over 45 years as a Pediatric Nurse and EKG Technician. Rebecca’s gentle spirit and boundless compassion made her a cherished caregiver, as she expertly combined medical skill with a nurturing heart. Her presence was a comfort to young patients and their families alike, leaving an indelible mark on all who crossed her path.
Rebecca’s life was profoundly shaped by her faith. From an early age, she embraced her spiritual journey, becoming an active and faithful member of St. Paul Temple Church of God in Christ. Her devotion to her church community was unwavering, and even when her health no longer allowed her physical presence, her spirit of worship and praise continued to thrive.
Family was at the core of Rebecca's existence. She treasured family reunions, whether in the South or the North, and delighted in the company of her extensive family network. Known affectionately as Cousin Rebecca, Becky, or Aunt Becky, her warmth and generosity were felt by all. Her gatherings were filled with laughter, love, and the unyielding bonds of kinship.
Rebecca’s marriage to Mr. Joseph Leaphart was a partnership grounded in love and mutual respect. Together, they built a life enriched by shared values and deep affection.
Her life was a testament to service, love, and unshakeable faith. Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of those she leaves behind—her sisters, sisters-in-law, and a vast network of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who adored her.
A celebration of Rebecca’s extraordinary life will be held on October 30, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at the Marshall-March Funeral Home and Washington National Cemetery. As we gather to honor her memory, we remember a woman whose kindness and grace touched us all. Her spirit will forever guide us, reminding us of the profound impact one compassionate life can have on the world.
