It is with heavy hearts and profound appreciation for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Raymond Melvin Hayes, who left this world peacefully on April 26, 2026, at the Wonder City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Raymond's journey through life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and unwavering kindness. Born to Christopher and Margie Bland Hayes, Raymond was the embodiment of resilience and warmth, a beacon of light for all who knew him. He is predeceased by his beloved parents, his sisters Julia Flowers, Cynthia Hayes, Catherine Howard, and brothers Joe Hayes and Henry Hayes. Their memories remain cherished in the hearts of those who loved them. Raymond's cherished legacy continues through his loving and devoted son, Raymond Mason Sr, and daughter-in-law Kimberly; three grandchildren, Raymond Mason Jr (Cheronda), Ra'Mya Mason and Rikisha Gilliam; five great-grandchildren, Jayden Slaughter, Cher'Rai Mason, Aaron Neal Jr, Zell Robinson and Jacorion Gilliam they were the pride and joy of his life, each a testament to his enduring influence and love. His life was further enriched by the enduring companionship of Shirley Mason, who preceded him in death. Together, they created a life filled with love and laughter that will be fondly remembered by all who knew them. Raymond was a man of varied talents and interests, reflected in his career. He worked diligently at Seward Luggage, Central State Hospital, and the Petersburg Library, bringing dedication and a tireless work ethic to each endeavor. His colleagues and friends remember him for his gentle spirit and generous heart, qualities that left an indelible mark on every community he was part of. Raymond's surviving family includes his sisters, Mable Edmonds, Dorothy White, Mary Wilkerson, Marlene Jackson (Leonard), and Barbara Pearson (Samuel), and his brother Preston Hayes (Gail). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Devoted his grandson Raymond Mason Jr, granddaughter Ra'Mya Mason, nephew Louis Howard and brother Preston Hayes was a steadfast presence, providing love and support during Raymond's illness. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to everyone who reached out with phone calls, text messages, and heartfelt cards during this time of mourning. Your kindness and compassion have provided much-needed comfort and strength. Raymond Melvin Hayes was a man of integrity, love, and compassion. His life was a testament to the power of kindness and the importance of family.
