It is with deep sadness and a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Ralph Ervin Shelby, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He departed this world on May 12, 2026, in Otwell, Indiana, at the age of 73. Born on September 4, 1952, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Ralph was the beloved son of Robert Erwin Shelby and Billie Louise Tyson. Ralph's journey through life was marked by a deep commitment to family, honor, and service. He was predeceased by his loving parents; his sisters, Nana Shelby Daniel and Mary Dykes Tate; his grandson, Ethan Ray Shelby; and cherished nieces, Tamariah Sticks, Ashley Smith, and Taisha Foster. He is survived by his devoted wife of 15 years, Rachelle Cullinson Shelby, who remained his steadfast partner through life's many adventures. Ralph also leaves behind his ex-wife, Willa Mae Points Shelby, with whom he shared many years and cherished memories. Together, they were the proud parents of Steven Lucas Ray Shelby and Kathy Renee' Shelby Kelley. Ralph also embraced his stepson, Ronnie Alexander Patton, and his wife, Bree, as part of his family. Ralph also leaves behind 4 sisters Donna Shelby Ruhaak, Sue Dykes Gray and her partner Bob Porter, Betty Jo Dykes Owens and her Husband Shelden Owens, Tammi Dykes Foster and husband all of Vinta Oklahoma, 1 brother John Dykes of Salina, Oklahoma Ralph's legacy extends to his 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, in whom he took immense pride and joy. He was a guiding light and a pillar of strength for each generation, passing on his values of love, respect, and resilience. Throughout his life, Ralph exemplified a spirit of dedication and service. After attending schools in Coweta, Tulsa, and Catootsa, Oklahoma, he earned his GED through Job Corps and embarked on a distinguished military career. Serving in the U.S. Army from November 1970 to December 1990, Ralph was a proud Vietnam veteran, having served from July 1971 to April 1972. His service took him across the globe, from Germany to Korea, and Greece, earning the rank of Sgt. E-5 in 1975. Ralph's dedication to his country was unwavering, and his brothers in arms held a special place in his heart. Following his military service, Ralph worked in various roles, from a grocery sacker to a security guard at Tyson Foods, until he retired in 2005 due to medical reasons. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and found joy in attending meetings with fellow veterans. Ralph was raise a Baptist but became A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints since 1987, he embraced a life of faith and community. Ralph had a passion for fishing and woodworking, pursuits that brought him peace and joy. He cherished his time spent with family, especially his daughter, Kathy, who was his pride and joy, and his son, Steven, with whom he shared a special bond. Ralph opened his heart to his stepson, Alex, raising him from a young age and adopting him in spirit. His love extended to his nieces, nephews, and his only brother, with whom he shared a unique and enduring bond. Ralph's warmth and love for his family were matched by his playful spirit and sense of humor. Though he often appeared formidable, those who knew him best recognized the gentle teddy bear within. His love for his animals mirrored his love for his family, nurturing all with equal care and affection. A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Ralph's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Wound Soldiers, an organization Ralph held dear. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered prayers and support during this difficult time. Ralph's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his legacy of love, service, and devotion will continue to inspire us all.
