In Loving Memory of Ralph Edward Ward Jr. June 25, 1940 – July 29, 2026 Ralph Edward Ward Jr. was called home to be with the Lord on July 29, 2026, at the age of 86. Ralph was born on June 25, 1940, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to the late Ralph Edward Ward Sr. and Ethel Josephine (Wilson) Cooke. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Marcus A. Ward Sr. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving children: Eric R. Ward (Lynn) Williamsburg Virginia; Donnie E. Ward (Sherrie ),of Chester, Virginia; and Denise A. Coleman (Marlon) of Newport News, Virginia. He is also survived by his devoted younger brother, Daniel L. Ward (Alma), of Linden, New Jersey; his ex -wife and longtime friend Ms. Barbara A.Ward, and his companion of 20 years, Aleta Phillips; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, extended family, and many dear friends. Born and raised in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Ralph grew up alongside his parents and younger brother. At the age of 18, in 1958, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army, where he faithfully served his country until 1967. During his military service, he earned several commendations and awards in recognition of his dedication and commitment. In 1970, Ralph began a distinguished career in Civil Service at the Fort Eustis Auto Craft Shop, where he served as a Mechanic Instructor. For 35 years, he took great pride in mentoring others and sharing his expertise until his retirement in 1995 at the age of 55. Although he enjoyed retirement, Ralph believed in staying active and productive. He spent several years driving for Associated Taxi, working part time at Auto Zone before earning his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and driving tractor-trailers with Swift Trucking for a period of time. Ralph was known for his vibrant personality, remarkable intelligence, wisdom. He had a gift for teaching and found great joy in sharing his knowledge with anyone willing to learn. He was a lifelong learner whose interests were as diverse as they were inspiring. Ralph enjoyed photography, shooting pool, riding motorcycles, listening to music, reading—including famously reading the entire dictionary and writing. His curiosity and love of learning left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Above all, Ralph treasured his family. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, using every opportunity to pass along the wisdom, values, and life lessons that defined him. His guidance, encouragement, and unwavering love will continue to live on through the generations he helped shape. Ralph Edward Ward Jr. will be remembered for his strength, kindness, integrity, humor, and the wealth of knowledge he generously shared throughout his life.
