Obituary of Ralph A. Hanson With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ralph A. Hanson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Ralph peacefully departed this life on May 1, 2026, at the age of 86, with his devoted wife, Mary, by his side in their cherished home. Born on August 11, 1939, in Litchfield, Minnesota, to Arnold F. and Elva T. (Fritze) Hanson, Ralph's journey through life was one of dedication, love, and laughter. Ralph's early years in Litchfield shaped him into a man with a deep sense of duty and a zest for life. After graduating from Litchfield High School in 1957, Ralph briefly attended college before deciding that his true calling lay in hands-on experiences rather than in classrooms. He embarked on a remarkable journey of service, initially joining the National Guard and later serving in the United States Air Force Reserve with the 47th Airlift Wing out of Minneapolis, MN. His proud service during the Vietnam War culminated in his retirement in 1984 as a Senior Master Sergeant, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his country. It was during his time in the Air Force Reserve that Ralph met Mary, his beloved partner of nearly 53 years. Their love story, born from shared adventures and mutual respect, was a beacon of strength and joy. Together, they explored the globe, creating memories and friendships that they cherished deeply. Ralph's professional journey saw him dabble in various roles before finding his niche at Northwest Airlines, where he dedicated 36 years of his life. His career took an unexpected turn when a heart murmur ended his flying days, but Ralph embraced new roles with enthusiasm, working in customer service and sharing stories that only a life of public interaction could provide. His colleagues and customers alike knew him for his quick wit, his ability to lighten any room, and his genuine care for all he encountered. A man of many talents, Ralph was also a passionate singer, a love he discovered at the tender age of five in his church choir. Singing alongside his father in the adult choir after his confirmation was a cherished memory that he carried throughout his life. For nearly 45 years, Ralph was an active member of the Bloomington Sportsman Chorus, and in retirement, he joyfully returned to his church choir, finding solace and happiness in music. Ralph's love for the outdoors, particularly fishing, was a lifelong passion. He spent countless summers on the water, participating in bass tournaments and contributing to charitable causes, embodying the spirit of giving and community that defined his life. In his later years, Ralph's involvement with the Minneapolis Aquatennial, where he served as the Senior Commodore from 2017-2018, brought him immense pride, connecting him back to his roots in Litchfield. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Elva Hanson, his son-in-law Collin Buzzell, and numerous other beloved family members. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter in the hearts of his surviving family: his cherished wife Mary Hanson; his children Chad (Shelly) Hanson, Kristopher Hanson, and Kirsten Buzzell; his adored grandchildren Brittany Hanson and Eleasar Buzzell; his brother Randley A. (Ellen) Hanson; nieces Melissa and Karrie Hanson; and a wide circle of friends, extended family, past co-workers, fellow chorus singers, and long-time neighbors. Ralph will be remembered for his quick wit, his capacity to bring joy to those around him, and his steadfast commitment to family and community. His quiet strength, fortitude, and unwavering work ethic were the cornerstones of a life well-lived. A service to celebrate Ralph's life will be held on May 6, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, located at 13600 Technology Drive. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available at https://standrewlu.org/. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be directed to the Music Ministry or Spirit of the Pines Camp at St. Andrew Lutheran Church. Donations can be made online at https://standrewlu.org/ under the Giving Tab. As we bid farewell to Ralph, we honor a life filled with love, service, and the joy of bringing smiles to others. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.
