June 23, 1944 — May 4, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Rafael Arias, age 81, on May 4, 2026. Rafael left this world after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family. Born on June 23, 1944, in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico, Rafael's life was a testament to resilience, love, and joy. Rafael was the beloved son of Rafael and Maria Teresa Arias, who predeceased him, as did his siblings, Carol, Victor, Carmen, and Rocio. He is survived by his devoted wife, Taffy Arias, with whom he shared 54 vibrant years of marriage. Their union, begun on June 18, 1972, in Parral, Mexico, was a journey of adventure, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Rafael was a proud father to Claudine Arias of Dallas, Texas; Gabriel Arias and his wife, Jo Anne, of El Paso, Texas; and Mellisa Arias and her husband, Darryl, of Australia. He was a cherished grandfather to six grandchildren and a doting great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren. His legacy continues through his surviving siblings: Maria Teresa Oliverrierto of Mexico City, Leticia Silveria of Parral, and Raul Arias and his wife, Isabelle, of Mexico City. Educated in Chihuahua, Rafael attended military school in Mexico City and pursued a law degree at the University of Mexico City. His career was diverse and fulfilling, beginning with his work at the Holiday Inn Downtown El Paso, where he managed the Top of the Inn restaurant. His professional journey took him to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he managed hotels, and ultimately to Palomas, Mexico, where he spent most of his career managing a wood profile company. Rafael was a man of immense social skills, known for his quick wit, endless storytelling, and contagious smile. His dynamic personality and larger-than-life presence left an indelible mark on everyone he met, whether in his hometown or across the globe. He was a devoted father, always a source of support and protection, and as a husband, he was both a delightful challenge and a constant source of laughter. His wife, Taffy, fondly recalls how Rafael's thoughtful and generous nature taught her about life and love, gifting her with a life filled with adventure, excitement, and passion. Their deep connection was a testament to their enduring love. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Monica Diaz, oncologist, and the compassionate staff at Texas Oncology, Dr. Prachosh and the team at River Valley Pulmonary, and the dedicated ER and ICU staff at Providence East, especially Claudia and Roxanne, for their exceptional care and support. Rafael Arias will be remembered as a beacon of joy and love, whose laughter and stories will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. His memory will forever be cherished by his family and friends, who find comfort in the profound impact he had on their lives.
