It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Powell "Pete" Thomas, Jr., a cherished husband, devoted stepfather, beloved brother, and esteemed veteran, who returned to his Lord on September 27, 2026, following a tragic boating accident near the Boynton Beach Inlet in Boynton Beach, Florida. Born on June 15, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Pete's journey through life was marked by extraordinary dedication, courage, and love. Pete was the beloved son of the late Powell Thomas Sr. and Barbara K. Thomas, and brother to the late Lucinda Gautier. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy, with whom he shared 15 wonderful years of Christian marriage, filled with joy and gratitude. Together, they built a life brimming with love and laughter, always cherishing each moment they had with each other. A proud graduate of Westtown School in 1964, Pete's commitment to service was exemplified by his military career. As a Sergeant in the United States Army, he bravely served two tours in Vietnam, earning numerous honors, including three Bronze Stars and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation. His service to his country was a testament to his unwavering dedication and patriotism. Following his military service, Pete pursued higher education at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. His professional career included working as a state Construction Inspector for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, where he was known for his diligence and integrity. Pete's life was a tapestry of passion and commitment, woven through his love for pelagic fishing. A registered captain with the U.S. Coast Guard, he won numerous fishing awards, including a first-place victory at the 2024 Offshore open tournament with the Ocean City Marlin and Tuna Club. In 2007, he founded the VFW Fishing Tournament in Key West, Florida, which raised much-needed funds for disabled and needy veterans in Monroe County. His heart was as vast as his accomplishments, and Pete's compassion knew no bounds. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2022 by the Daughters of the American Revolution for his lifelong dedication to helping others. His involvement in countless organizations, including the Sons of the Revolution, Commander of The VFW (Post 3911), AMVETS, Vietnam Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, Society of Colonial Wars, Ocean City Marlin and Tuna Club, reflected his commitment to community and country. Pete's family will forever remember his quick wit, steadfastness, and his unwavering dedication to family, God, and the United States of America. He leaves behind his cherished stepchildren, Traci Beck (husband Mark), Master Sergeant Michael Kopitzke (wife Quenieann), and Theresa Kopitzke, along with eight beloved grandchildren. Pete is also survived by his sister Barbara of Oldsmar, Florida, her children Elizabeth Doten and Peter Doten, brother John (wife Jan) and their son James Thomas, brother Geoff, and niece Jessica Zarnik (Gautier). In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to organizations supporting veterans, as a tribute to Pete’s enduring legacy of service and kindness. Rest in peace, dear Pete. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.
