In Loving Memory

Phyllis Jean Bender
January 5, 1946 — January 14, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Phyllis Jean Bender, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who left this world on January 14, 2026. Phyllis, aged 80, was surrounded by love in her final moments at her home, cared for by her devoted daughter, Keri Breckenridge, son-in-law Caleb Breckenridge, and her faithful puppy, Nico.
Born on January 5, 1946, in Ames, Iowa, Phyllis was the cherished daughter of Ralph and Mabel McMahon. She was welcomed into a loving family, alongside her sister Patricia and brother Robert. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, sister Patricia Ryan, brother-in-law Laverne Ryan, brother Robert McMahon, sister-in-law Beverly McMahon, and her beloved partner, Donald Jones.
Phyllis’s journey through life was marked by her unwavering dedication to family, community, and her craft. She graduated from Ames High School in 1964 and pursued her passion for beauty and cosmetology, graduating from cosmetology school in 1965. Her talent and dedication were evident as she worked in various salons and became a licensed instructor for a local beauty school. However, it was in her cozy home salon in East Wenatchee where she truly made her mark, offering not just haircuts, but warmth and kindness to all who sat in her chair.
In 1964, Phyllis married Kern Bender, and together they had two children, Keri and Troy, who were the light of her life. Though Phyllis and Kern parted ways in 1992, their shared love for their children remained steadfast. In 1994, Phyllis found love again with Donald Jones, a partnership that brought her immense joy and countless adventures.
Phyllis had a zest for life that was evident in her many hobbies and interests. She found peace and happiness camping along the Oregon coast and up the Icicle River near Leavenworth, Washington. Fishing trips with Donald were among her favorite pastimes, and she cherished every moment spent traveling with her daughter Keri to fast-pitch softball games and the Wenatchee Youth Circus.
As a mother, Phyllis was dedicated beyond measure, nurturing her children with love, wisdom, and support. Her legacy lives on in her daughter Keri Breckenridge, son-in-law Caleb Breckenridge, her son Troy Bender, daughter-in-law Maureen Bender, and her adored granddaughter, Mason Bender. Her niece, Rebecca Hauser, and ex-husband, Kern Bender, also survive her, carrying forward her memory.
Phyllis will be remembered for her hard work, kindness, and caring nature. She touched the lives of many, offering a smile, a listening ear, and a heart full of love to everyone she met. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her, and her warmth will be deeply missed.
A service to celebrate Phyllis’s life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor her legacy and share cherished memories.
As we say goodbye to Phyllis Jean Bender, we hold onto the love and joy she brought into our lives, knowing she is now at peace, reunited with her loved ones who passed before her. May her soul rest in eternal tranquility.
