Philip H Smithers

Philip H. Smithers, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 14, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication. Born on January 26, 1942, in the quaint town of Heuvelton, NY, Philip was the cherished son of Almond J. Smithers and Martha (Holmes) Smithers. His childhood was enriched by the warmth of his family, alongside his brother, Harold, and sisters, Eleanor Blackburn and Muriel Leboeuf. A graduate of Heuvelton Central, Philip pursued higher education at Canton Agricultural and Technical College, where he studied accounting. His career began with a remarkable achievement at Sears and Roebuck in Canada, where, in 1965, he became the youngest manager in the company. He later dedicated his professional life to the International Union of Operating Engineers, retiring in 2018 after a long and fulfilling career. Philip's life was a testament to his varied passions and interests. An avid outdoorsman and equestrian, he found joy in hunting, fishing, and riding horses. He was equally at home racing snowmobiles with his beloved wife, Sylvia(Cricket), playing softball, or bowling. His intelligence and quick wit were the hallmarks of his personality, and he would often be found in his favorite chair, engrossed in a good book. Philip was a proud member of the St. Lawrence Valley Polo Group and the St. Lawrence Valley Cowboys Association, communities where he formed lasting friendships and shared many joyous moments. On July 16, 1964, Philip married the love of his life, Sylvia (Cricket) J. Richer, in Tupper Lake, NY. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared 47 years of marriage until Sylvia's passing. Their union brought forth a loving family, including his/their children Tanya Lee-Dombrowski, Nick Smithers, Tonya Smithers-Crundwell, Scott Smithers, and Angela Dooley. Philip was also the proud grandfather of 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Philip is predeceased by his wife, Sylvia (Cricket), his parents, Almond and Martha, his brother, Harold, and his sisters, Eleanor and Muriel. He leaves behind a loving family, including his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. In accordance with his wishes, no funeral ceremony will be held. The family expresses their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. "Life is just a stepping-stone. A pause before we make it home." Philip H. Smithers will be deeply missed and forever cherished in the hearts of all who knew him.
