June 5, 1955 — June 10, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Phil Hontz, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many. Phil peacefully departed this world on June 10, 2026, at the age of 71, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.
Born on June 5, 1955, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Phil was the cherished son of Leon and Dorothy Hontz. From an early age, Phil exhibited a zest for life and an unyielding dedication to his family and community, traits that were nurtured and encouraged by his parents. He graduated from Louis E. Dieruff High School in 1974, setting the foundation for a life characterized by hard work and commitment.
Phil devoted 44 years of his career to The Morning Call in Allentown, PA, where he was a respected and admired colleague. His work was not just a profession but a passion, and he dedicated himself to it with integrity and diligence. Phil's contributions to the paper were numerous, and his legacy there will not be forgotten.
In 1985, Phil married the love of his life, Karen L. Hontz (née Krasley). Together, they built a beautiful life grounded in love, respect, and shared dreams. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, and they spent 38 wonderful years together before Karen's passing in 2023. Phil's heart was always full when he spoke of Karen, and their love story remains a beacon of hope and inspiration to all who knew them.
Phil is survived by his cherished children, Dawn M. Stauffer and Garry W. James, who were the pride of his life. He was a devoted father who instilled in them the values of kindness, respect, and perseverance. Phil's legacy continues through his grandchildren, David, Dawn, Jesse, Hailey, and Alex, and his great-grandchildren, Darion and Dezmend, who brought immeasurable joy to his life.
Phil was predeceased by his beloved wife, Karen, his parents Dorothy and Leon Hontz, and his sister, Linda. Though his family chain is broken, his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him.
In his later years, Phil found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His home was often filled with laughter, storytelling, and the aroma of his famous family dinners. Phil's warmth and generosity extended beyond his family, touching the lives of countless friends and neighbors.
In accordance with Phil's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor his life and legacy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they have received during this difficult time.
Phil Hontz will forever be remembered for his gentle spirit, his unwavering love for his family, and his dedication to his community. His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Phil's memory to a charity of one's choice, continuing his legacy of helping others.
