Peter Stephen Gradsten
August 5, 1950 — February 17, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Stephen Gradsten, who departed this world peacefully at his home on February 17, 2026. Born on August 5, 1950, in the bustling heart of New York City, Peter lived a life filled with adventure, creativity, and boundless love. He faced his long battle with Parkinson's disease with courage and grace, demonstrating the strength and resilience that defined his character.
Peter was the beloved son of Dr. Marcel and Elfriede Gradsten, who instilled in him a passion for learning and a curiosity about the world. He carried these gifts throughout his life, graduating from Columbia University in 1974 and furthering his education with a Master's degree from NYU in 1976.
Peter began his professional journey wearing many hats, including roles as a postal worker, taxi driver, and surgical technician. However, it was in the world of computer programming where he truly found his calling. He had an innate talent for coding, which he applied with the same dedication and enthusiasm that characterized all his endeavors.
On September 19, 1992, Peter married the love of his life, Darunee Gradsten. Together they built a beautiful life over 34 years, raising two wonderful daughters, Tanida and Cyndi, who were the joy of his existence. Peter was a devoted husband and father, always putting his family first and supporting them with unwavering love and a quick wit that never failed to bring laughter into their home.
Beyond his family and career, Peter was a man of many passions. His love for music was evident in his mastery of the guitar, electric keyboard, and piano. He was not only a performer but a composer of blues music, sharing his melodies with all who were fortunate enough to listen. Peter's adventurous spirit led him to skydive, travel nomadically, and even enjoy a stint working with a circus — a testament to his zest for life and willingness to embrace the unknown.
Peter's kindness extended beyond humans, as he was a lover of animals and nature, seeing beauty and wonder in every living thing. His intelligence and selflessness were hallmarks of his personality, as was his great sense of humor, which remained intact even in the face of adversity.
A service to celebrate Peter's life will be held on February 19, 2026, at 123 Funeral Home, located at 123 Main St. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available at www.link for obit. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to 123 Hospice of Sarasota for their compassionate care and support during Peter's final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Peter's memory to a charity of choice, reflecting his generous spirit and desire to make the world a better place.
Peter Stephen Gradsten leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and light. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
