January 28, 1936 — June 13, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Peter Henry Rea, who departed this world on June 13, 2026, in the loving embrace of his home after a courageous battle with dementia. Born on January 28, 1936, in Hilda, Missouri, Peter lived a life rich with purpose, warmth, and an unwavering dedication to his family, community, and country. Peter was the cherished son of Cyrus Frank Rea and Nellie Chadborne Smith Rea, both of whom predeceased him. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Marybeth Rea Craig (James Lee Craig), Barbara Jean Rea Rhodes (Charles C. Rhodes), Doris Marie Rea Haggar (Jim Haggar), and John Cyrus Rea (Velma Blankenship Rea). Peter's journey of learning began at Branson High School, where he graduated in 1954. He then took his intellectual curiosity to the University of Missouri, earning a degree in political science before furthering his education in law. His academic pursuits were matched by his service to his country; he proudly served as a 2nd Lieutenant on active duty with the United States Marine Corps and continued with four years in the reserves. A man of the law, Peter practiced with a heart full of compassion and a spirit of generosity. Known for accepting unconventional forms of payment—ranging from chickens and pies to cattle and horses—he ensured that justice was accessible to all. His legal acumen was matched by his dedication to public service, serving as the city attorney for both Branson and Hollister, and earning a modest $400 per month. His legacy includes his tenure as Taney County Prosecutor and Associate Circuit Judge, where he notably established a night court to accommodate those unable to afford missing work for legal proceedings. Peter's love for animals was as boundless as his love for people. His home was a sanctuary for dogs, cats, chickens, goats, and his beloved donkeys, which were often seen meandering along Fallcreek Road or Highway 76. Endowed with a quick wit, keen insight, and a clever sense of humor, Peter was wise beyond his years. He possessed a perfect pitch and a deep bass voice, which resonated as beautifully as his avid discussions about history and literature. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 38 years, Darlene Rea, who stood by his side with unwavering love and strength. Together, they shared a life filled with laughter, love, and a profound commitment to each other. Peter is also survived by 11 adoring grandchildren, who carry forward his legacy of kindness and integrity. A service to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of Peter Henry Rea will be held on June 26, 2026. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the community for their support and kindness during this difficult time. Peter's life was a testament to the power of love, compassion, and service. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family and friends.
