Peggy W. Bullard

We celebrate the remarkable life of Peggy W. Bullard, who peacefully passed away at the age of 92. Born on June 12, 1934, in Lumberton, North Carolina, Peggy was the cherished daughter of Kelly Washington and Daisy Cogdell Washington. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her sister, Christine Whitehead. Peggy leaves behind a legacy of love through her daughter, Adrianne R. Bullard, and numerous special relatives, including Anthony Pittman(Sharon), John Pittman, Albert Pierce(Jackie), Thomas Pierce(Barbara), Marzette Cuttray, Ezell Cuttray, Jennie Alford(Alexander), Edward Cuttray, Floyd Powell, her sister Thelma Malone, and a host of nieces and nephews. Peggy’s educational journey began at Bladen County Training School in Elizabethtown, NC, and continued at St. Paul's Polytechnic Institute in Lawrenceville, VA, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education. She pursued post-graduate training at Cornell University, the Veterans Administration Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, and Fayetteville Technical Community College. Her dedication to learning and excellence led her to a distinguished career as a Registered Dietitian, serving nearly 30 years at Peninsula General Hospital in Far Rockaway, NY. Peggy was a trailblazer, becoming the first black woman to supervise dietary workers in a 200-bed hospital and the first to gain membership in the American Dietetic Association. Her compassionate nature ensured that every individual in her care received nourishment, kindness, and dignity. In 1988, Peggy opened her first Family Care Daycare Center, nurturing and guiding children aged 1-7 with love and wisdom. Her commitment to community and service was evident through her involvement in numerous organizations and outreach programs, including the starting the Sunday School program at The Church of The Good Shepherd in Lakeview, NY, working with Helping Hands in Fayetteville, NC, and the Alms House in Hope Mills, NC. Peggy was a vibrant soul with a keen sense of humor, known for her sharp yet harmless wit. She found joy in wrestling events with her great nieces and cherished driving to visit her family, filling her days with love and laughter. Her evenings were often spent enjoying episodes of Family Feud, a testament to her love for family and fun. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, Captain and Deputy Hart, and the Hope Mills Police Department for their unwavering support and care. A special thank you to the staff at Hope Mills Medical Center for providing Peggy with tranquility and personal care, and to Tremika Simms, who became not only her caregiver but a cherished granddaughter.
