Paula Carey

January 30, 1951 — July 14, 2026

Paula Carey, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, at the age of 75. Born on January 30, 1951, in Clifton Forge, Virginia, Paula was the cherished daughter of William H. Layne and Mary M. Layne. She now joins her parents and her brother, Mason Layne, in eternal rest. Paula's life was a testament to love, dedication, and service. She married Donald Carey, the love of her life, on April 10, 1976. This year, they celebrated 50 remarkable years together. Their union was blessed with two children, Melanie Carey of Oklahoma City, OK, and Dale Carey, who, along with his wife Jamie, resides in Dale, OK. Paula's legacy continues through her grandchildren, Caitlynn Carey of Claremore, OK, Bennett Carey, and Jacksen Jacobs of Dale, OK, who brought immense joy and pride to her life. A proud graduate of Clifton Forge High School, class of 1969, Paula pursued further education later in life, earning an Associate Degree in Early Care Education from Oklahoma State University in 2010. Her career path took her to American Airlines, where she worked as a reservation clerk. However, her true passion lay in nurturing young minds. From volunteering at her children's school to leading Girl Scout troops, Paula found her calling in childcare. In 2000, she began working at New Horizons in Oklahoma City, where she thrived as a teacher and later as a director until her retirement in 2013. Her heart was most full when working with toddlers, marveling at their curiosity and growth. In retirement, Paula embraced new adventures, traveling with her beloved husband and family, and cherishing every moment spent with her grandchildren. She was an active member of Quill Springs United Methodist Church and occasionally attended Life Church in Oklahoma City. Her love for travel, especially to Myrtle Beach, her joy in shopping with her daughter Melanie, and her eagerness to learn new things, even if it meant attempting video games with her grandchildren, demonstrated her zest for life. Paula was known for her kindness and the way she treated others with the utmost respect and compassion. Her Tuesday and Saturday chats with her dear friend Nikki, and her dining outings with daughter-in-law Jamie, were treasured rituals that enriched her life. She leaves behind a loving sister, Susan Layne of Rocky Mount, VA, her nephew Jacob Layne, and extended family members Lynne Bland of Virginia Beach, VA, and Steve Bland and his wife Diane of White Sulphur, WV. Paula's generous spirit and warm heart will be deeply missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Paula's memory. Her life was a profound reminder of the impact of love, kindness, and dedication.
