Paul Schantz
June 13, 1932 — February 22, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Paul Schantz, who departed this world peacefully on February 22, 2026, at the age of 93. Paul was born on June 13, 1932, in the charming town of Caledonia, Michigan, to the late Louis and Cora Schantz. He was the cherished brother of Richard and Robert, whose memories live on in our hearts.
Paul's journey through life was marked by love, dedication, and service. A proud graduate of Caledonia High School, Paul went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Business from Michigan State University, an institution that remained close to his heart throughout his life. His passion for learning and commitment to excellence led him to serve his country in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1954, where he exemplified the values of honor and duty.
In 1955, Paul married the love of his life, Barbara Smith, and together they fashioned a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and adventure for nearly 69 years. Their union was blessed with three wonderful daughters: Joy (Jeff) Reep, Jane (Tim) Fiehrer, and Jill (Brett) Goecke, who, along with eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, are his enduring legacy.
Paul dedicated his professional life to Hess & Clark in Ashland, Ohio, where he began his career as a regional salesman and rose to the position of Sales Manager through hard work and an unwavering commitment to excellence. His colleagues remember him as a dependable and trustworthy leader, known for his kindness and generosity.
A man of deep faith, Paul was an active member of The First United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees and once taught the Friendship Class. His spiritual journey continued at Faith United Methodist Church in Fort Myers, Florida, where his warmth and dedication touched many lives.
Music was the melody of Paul’s life. As a member of both the Ashland Community Band and The Sanibel Community Band, his clarinet breathed life into countless performances, and he played with passion and joy until his final days. Paul also shared his love for music with his family, supporting them in their musical pursuits, just as he did with their other interests and activities.
Paul was an avid golfer, finding tranquility on the greens of Ohio and Florida well into his late 80s. His love for sports was matched only by his fervor for history and fiction, and his lifelong allegiance to Michigan State University’s football and basketball teams was a staple of his character.
Paul's legacy is one of kindness, generosity, and an unwavering willingness to lend a helping hand. His presence was a gift to all who knew him, and his memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and the communities he served.
A service to celebrate Paul's life will be held at 2:00 PM on April 12, 2026, at The First United Methodist Church, located at 220 Sandusky Street. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The First United Methodist Church or the Ashland County Community Foundation, organizations that were dear to Paul’s heart.
Paul Schantz leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and dedication. He touched many lives with his warm heart and generous spirit, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
