June 18, 1934 — March 30, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Paul David Rather, who departed this world peacefully on March 30, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on June 18, 1934, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Paul was the beloved son of the late John W. Rather and Vera V. McCabe. He was preceded in death by his cherished sister, Barbara Massey, and brother, Richard Rather.
Paul's journey was beautifully shared with his devoted wife of 66 years, LaDonna M. Rather, whom he married on November 7, 1959, at St. Michael's Church in Greenfield, Indiana. Together, they built a life filled with love, adventure, and cherished memories, raising three wonderful children: Christopher (Laura) Rather of Greensburg, Indiana; Lynn (Monte) of Chandler, Arizona; and Penny (Nick) Plante of Theresa, New York. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of his life. Paul also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, along with a multitude of friends from Anderson, Indiana, and Apache Junction, Arizona, who will forever remember his warmth and kindness.
Paul's early years were marked by his service to his country. He bravely served in the Army Reserve at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, from 1952 to 1953, and subsequently in the United States Airforce from 1954 to 1957 as an Airman First Class. His duties took him both stateside and to Japan, where he utilized his skills as an accountant.
After his military service, Paul embarked on a distinguished 38-year career with General Motors in Anderson, Indiana. Known for his organizational prowess and accounting expertise, he made a lasting impact at the company until his retirement in 1991. His commitment to excellence and integrity was mirrored in his personal life as a devoted member of the St. George Catholic Church for 25 years, and more recently, St. Stevens Catholic Church. Paul's unwavering dedication to his community was evident through his volunteer efforts with organizations such as the Boy Scouts, the Optimist Club, and the local food bank in Apache Junction. He was instrumental in creating and running a men's volunteer organization for the elderly, reflecting his deep commitment to serving others.
Paul's life was enriched by his passions and hobbies, which included tending to his beloved vegetable garden and sharing its bounty with neighbors, a testament to his generous spirit. He and LaDonna embraced the joys of travel and adventure, with a particular fondness for hiking the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. A collector of coins, an avid puzzler, and a keen metal detectorist, Paul was always ready to engage in a friendly card or dice game. His friends and family fondly recall his ability to forge deep connections, attributing his large circle of friends to his unwavering loyalty and genuine friendship.
Above all, Paul will be remembered for his hard work, integrity, and boundless generosity. His kindness touched the lives of many, leaving a legacy of love and compassion that will endure for generations.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate Paul's remarkable life will be held on May 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Park Cemetery, located at 621 S. State St., Greenfield, Indiana 46140. Following the service, a gathering will take place at the James Whitcomb Reilly boyhood home, where friends and family can share memories and stories of the remarkable man Paul was.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Paul's memory to the American Heart Association, an organization close to his heart, through the memorial fund "Honoring Paul David Rather." Donations can be made online at American Heart Association Donation Page.
