September 4, 1935 — September 5, 2026
Patrick Newbern, a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on September 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 4, 1935, in Norfolk, Virginia, Patrick lived a full and joyous life, marked by his enduring love for family, his unwavering work ethic, and his passion for music.
Patrick was the beloved son of James Arthur Newbern Sr. and Lilian Tatum Newbern. He was preceded in death by his parents and his dear wife, Lyle Jean Newbern, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage that began in 1954.
Patrick's life was a testament to his dedication and commitment. He graduated from Maury High School, where he was a standout musician, holding the esteemed position of first chair in the band and earning All-State honors for four consecutive years. His musical prowess earned him a scholarship to Michigan State University, where he had the honor of performing with the Michigan Marching Band at the Rose Bowl—a highlight in his musical journey.
Patrick's professional life was marked by his tenure at the post office, where he worked for 35 years. Rising to the position of Branch Manager, he was instrumental in improving the performance and efficiency of his station. His dedication extended beyond his primary job, as he also pursued his love of music as a member of The 4 C's and later The Continentals. Despite his busy schedule, Patrick always ensured he was present for family dinners, cherishing those moments with his wife and children.
In his retirement, Patrick continued to embrace his love of work by assisting in his son Jeff's landscape business, where he contributed both in the field and behind the scenes with billing and communications. His commitment to his family was unwavering, and he found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sharing laughter and stories with his infectious smile and his ever-present collection of jokes.
Patrick is survived by his children: Mike Newbern and his wife Liz, Jeff Newbern and his devoted wife Anna, and Robin Newbern Walker and her husband Richard. He leaves behind a legacy of love to his four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored deeply.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Patrick's daughter-in-law, Anna Newbern, for her extraordinary care and devotion, ensuring that Patrick's wish to spend his final days at home was fulfilled.
In honor of Patrick's generous spirit and love for life, the family invites those wishing to make a memorial contribution to consider a charity of their choice.
Patrick's warmth, humor, and dedication to those he loved will forever be remembered, and his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know him.
