Patricia Ann Tope (Smith)

It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the peaceful passing of Patricia Ann Tope (Smith) on August 7, 2026, in the comforting presence of her beloved family and friends. Born in St. Louis, Michigan, on October 29, 1943, Patricia's life was a beacon of kindness, dedication, and warmth. Patricia was the cherished daughter of the late Harold and Velma Smith. She is predeceased by her brothers William, Robert, and John Smith, and her infant sister Joann Smith. A devoted sister to Diane Merrill, Patricia leaves behind a legacy of love through her daughter, Jennifer Tope, and her grandchild, Ashley Tope-Lewis, as well as bonus grandchildren Channing Lewis and Braeden Lewis. Her family, including an abundance of nieces and nephews, and her loving friend, were central to her life and were loved deeply. A proud graduate of Ithaca High School in 1962, Patricia pursued a career in nursing that spanned five decades. Her journey began as a candy striper in Gratiot County. With determination and passion, she earned her practical nursing license in 1964 and later obtained her registered nursing license in 1994 after graduating from Lansing Community College. Her commitment to caring for others was evident throughout her career at Lansing General Hospital and later Sparrow Hospital, where she retired from the Hospice department after 50 years of dedicated service. Patricia had a zest for life that was contagious. A lifelong fan of the MSU Spartans, she treasured her season tickets to the football games, which she enjoyed with her brother Bob and sister Diane. Patricia was also an avid collector of pigs and found joy in reading and playing games on her iPad. Her family shares a special message, a quote by Leo F. Buscaglia: "Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." Patricia embodied this sentiment every day. Celebration of Life services will be at a later date. Patricia Ann Tope was a treasure to all who knew her, and her legacy of love, compassion, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
