Owen Charles McKinney Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew and friend, passed away peacefully at home on July 24, 2026, after a valiant ten-year battle with colon and liver cancer. Born on October 3, 1951, in Hope, Arkansas, Owen was the cherished son of the late Owen Charles McKenney Sr. and Elizabet Matlock. Owen's life was a tapestry woven with resilience, generosity, and a profound love for family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Henry C. McKenney, Robert Lindsey, Alvin Hurn (Roberta), Anthony McKinney, Luther (Carolyn) Washington, and Jamie Washington, all of whom he held dear. He is survived by his devoted and lifelong friend, Vivian Smith. Owen and Vivian shared a remarkable bond over 22 years, marrying in 2005. Their marriage, though it did not last, blossomed into a deep friendship and partnership that remained unbroken. Owen was the proud father of daughters Jongelette (Jonie) Dudley, KaTrina Ford, Dee Dee (Kevin) Fowler, and Crystal (Dannick) Bropleah, all residing in Kansas. He also leaves behind two estranged daughters, Chonita McKenney and LaKisha McKenney. His legacy continues through his 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly and never failed to celebrate. Owen is also survived by his sisters, Mary Holyfield, Brenda Laudermilk, Gwendolyn Warren, Caroline Sue Laudermilk, Teresa Washington-Johnson, Linda (Darren) Hill of Arkansas, and Keisha (Dorian) DeBose, Shasmekila Washington, Vartrishe Washington of Kansas; brothers, RC Laudermilk, Freddie Laudermilk, James Charles Stewart, Doylan Washington, Buster McKenney, and Ted Laudermilk. His special nephew and niece, Daryl and Debra Holyfield, held a cherished place in his heart. Owen's educational journey began at Yerger High in the late '60s and later took him to Kansas City Kansas Community College, where he earned an Associate degree in social work in 2015. His early career as an 18-wheeler driver transitioned to roles as a construction worker and a dedicated drug addiction counselor. A man of faith, Owen was an active member of the Greater Revelation Evangelistic Outreach Church since 2018. He was known for his love of dominoes, bid whist, and spades, and was an ardent fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. His passion for cooking, especially barbecuing, and his knack for making everyone feel welcome, were hallmarks of his warm personality. Owen was a protector, a man who gave selflessly, and a pillar of support to those around him. He had a gift for listening without judgment and offering guidance with love and honesty. His courage in battling cancer for a decade was a testament to his indomitable spirit. A celebration of Owen's life will be held on August 8, 2026, at 11:00 AM at McFadden & Hitchye Funeral Enterprise, located at 411 S Walnut Street, Hope, Arkansas 71801. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Owen's memory. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Ascend Hospice and the Kansas University Medical Center for their compassionate care and support during Owen's journey.
