Owen Charles McKinney Jr

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Owen Charles McKinney Jr., who peacefully departed this life on July 24, 2026, at the age of 74, after a courageous 10-year battle with colon and liver cancer. Born on October 3, 1951, in Hope, Arkansas, Owen was a beacon of strength and compassion throughout his life. Owen was the beloved son of the late Owen Charles McKenney Sr. and Elizabet Matlock. He was predeceased by his cherished brothers, Henry C. McKenney, Robert Lindsey, Alvin Hurn(Roberta), Anthony McKenney and James Loudermilk. Owen leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted ex-wife and dear friend, Vivian Smith, with whom he shared a special bond for over 22 years. Owen was a proud father to his daughters, Jongelette (Jonie) Dudley, KaTrina Ford, Dee Dee (Kevin) Fowler, and Crystal (Dannick) Bropleh, all residing in Kansas. Chonita McKenney, Lakisha McKenney. He was a cherished brother to sisters Mary Holyfield, Brenda Loudermilk, Gwendolyn Warren, and Caroline Sue Loudermilk, and brothers RC Loudermilk, Freddie Loudermilk, Buster McKenney, and Ted Loudermilk. His family circle extended to include numerous nieces and nephews, with special mention of Daryl and Debra Holyfield, and Linda and Darren Hill. Owen also held a deep affection for his special Aunt Ina Abbott of St. Louis, Missouri. Owen's legacy is carried forward by his 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, each of whom he loved dearly and celebrated with unwavering dedication, never missing a birthday or moment to share in their joy. A graduate of Yerger High in the late 1960s, Owen later pursued higher education, earning an Associate degree in social work from Kansas City Kansas Community College in 2015. His professional journey began as a dump truck driver and later evolved into construction work with Miller Construction. Owen found his true calling as a drug addiction counselor, helping others until his retirement. In 2018, Owen became an active and cherished member of the Greater Revelation Evangelistic Outreach Church, Kansas City Ks. Pastor Enrick Clayton, where he found spiritual fulfillment and community evangelism. Owen's passions extended beyond his career. An avid dominoes player, he was known to "kick butt" in games and enjoyed playing bid whist and spades with friends. A fervent football fan, he rarely missed a Kansas City Chiefs game. Owen was also known for his culinary skills, often serving as the go-to man when it was time to barbecue. A man of remarkable generosity and kindness, Owen was quick on his feet and ever ready to lend a helping hand. He made everyone feel welcome and was a steadfast protector, always ready to give his last to anyone in need. He was a man of wisdom, listening without judgment and speaking truth with love. Owen's warmth and love for family were unparalleled. He cherished every moment with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, knowing each by name and celebrating their milestones. As we remember Owen's life, we celebrate a man who was a fighter to the very end, facing his illness with courage and dignity. He leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and resilience. In honor of Owen's memory, the family suggests donations be made to organizations supporting cancer research or the Greater Revelation Evangelistic Outreach Church, reflecting his enduring commitment to helping others.
