August 25, 1938 — June 28, 2026

It is with profound sadness yet deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Otis Squires Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who departed this world peacefully at his home on June 28, 2026, at the age of 87. Otis was born on August 25, 1938, in Bayboro, North Carolina, to Otis Squires Sr. and Annie Squires. He was a man of exceptional character, known for his unwavering dedication to his family, his faith, and his country. His early life was marked by the values of hard work and integrity, traits that he carried throughout his life. In 1958, Otis answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. Over a distinguished 28-year career, he rose to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, specializing in aircraft maintenance and serving as a crew chief. His devotion to duty and his exemplary service earned him respect and admiration from all who served alongside him. Even after retiring from the Air Force, his passion for aviation continued as he worked as an airplane maintenance technician for US Airways. Beyond his military and professional achievements, Otis was a devoted family man. He shared a blessed 62-year marriage with his cherished wife, Ruth Squires, until her passing. Together, they built a life filled with love and warmth, raising four wonderful children: Michelle Brooks (Larry), Maurice Squires (Deborah), Kimberly Jones, and Veronica Squires (Michael). His legacy continues through his children, his 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, whom he adored and who brought immense joy to his life. He was predeceased by his dear wife Ruth and his siblings Alberta, Perrelia, Ulysses, Ann, Edward, Louise, Simon Matthew, and Irene, as well as his grandsons Jermel and Tyron. Otis had a remarkable love for learning, particularly when it came to military history. He spent countless hours watching documentaries, with a special interest in Desert Storm, a testament to his lifelong commitment to understanding and honoring the sacrifices of those who served. He was a cherished member of the Mercy Seat Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia, where he found solace and community. His faith was a guiding light in his life, providing him with strength and comfort through life's challenges and triumphs. Otis is survived by his brother James Squires (Helen) and Fred Squires, who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength. His grandchildren—Arresha Giddens (Christopher), Brandi Squires, Nakesha Squires, Demetri Squires (Carmen), Steffan Jones, Leshae Brooks, Julian Jones, Jamaree Squires, Dominic Brooks, and Dontrae Brooks—along with his great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild, will continue to honor his memory through their lives. A service in celebration of Otis's life will be held on July 15, 2026, at Mercy Seat Baptist Church, located at 1013 Todds Ln, Hampton, VA 23666. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Otis are warmly invited to attend and commemorate the extraordinary life of a man who was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Otis's memory to a veterans' charity of your choice, as a tribute to his lifelong dedication to his fellow servicemen and women. Otis Squires Jr.'s legacy is one of love, service, and unwavering dedication. His spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him, and his memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family and friends.
