February 1, 1933 — June 8, 2026

Oscar Ray Savage, lovingly known to family and friends as Ray, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026, surrounded by his devoted family. He was born on February 1, 1933, in Pell City, Alabama, to Arthur and Della Savage. Ray lived a rich and fulfilling life, rooted deeply in love, service, and dedication to both his family and country. Ray’s journey began in the heart of Alabama, where he developed a passion for aviation that would shape his future. This passion led him to join the United States Air Force, where he served our nation with honor for over two decades, achieving the rank of Tech Sergeant. His time in the Air Force was marked by profound dedication and bravery, particularly during his service on the Early Warning Line in Alaska, a crucial mission during the Cold War. Ray’s skills as a Master Technician were unparalleled, and his love for the B-52 aircraft, which he often described as "the greatest plane ever built," was a testament to his commitment to excellence. During his esteemed military career, Ray earned several commendations, including the National Defense Service Award, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Outstanding Air Force Unit Award. His service took him on missions across the globe, and his resilience was never more evident than when he and his crew were briefly held as prisoners of war, an ordeal he humbly referred to as "a big miscommunication problem." Ray’s courage and composure during this time exemplified his steadfast character and commitment to his duty. In 1955, Ray married his beloved Virginia "Ginny" Wohnhas in Wellsburg, West Virginia. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising five children and creating a home filled with laughter and love. Their marriage spanned 61 remarkable years, a true testament to their unwavering devotion to one another. Even after Ginny’s passing, Ray’s love for her remained as strong as ever, a love he honored daily by visiting her resting place and wearing his wedding band until his final day. After retiring from the Air Force, Ray and his family settled in Prattville, Alabama, where he embarked on a new career with Winn Dixie. His work ethic and dedication were evident as he served the community for over 30 years. Ray was a man who cherished family above all else. He is survived by his loving children, Susan (Bob) Jacksland, Sheila (Marna) Savage, and Stacey Smith, who will carry forward his legacy of love and devotion. Ray was also a proud grandfather to three grandchildren and a great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren, all of whom were the light of his life. Ray’s interests extended beyond his family and career. He was an avid sports fan, enjoying both football and baseball. His family will fondly remember the many dinners and gatherings that showcased his warm spirit and infectious laughter. Ray was preceded in death by his cherished wife Ginny, his beloved son Patrick Ray Savage, and his dear daughter Sandra Savage. Their memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved them. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate nurses in the CVICU at Baptist Medical Center South and Baptist Hospice for the exceptional care they provided Ray in his final days, ensuring his comfort and dignity. Ray Savage leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and unwavering devotion that will continue to inspire all who knew him. As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life well-lived and honor a man whose memory will forever remain in our hearts.
