In Loving Memory

Oscar Comelous Furgerson
May 12, 1946 — June 28, 2026
Oscar Comelous “OC” Furgerson, a cherished father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away on June 28, 2026, at the age of 80. He was born on May 12, 1946, on Mother’s Day, in a home in Heflin, Alabama. OC's journey of learning began at Minor High School, where he graduated in 1964, paving the way for further academic pursuits. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Birmingham Southern College in 1968. His thirst for knowledge led him to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he completed a Master's degree in Secondary Education.
OC's professional life was marked by his unwavering dedication to service. He taught 7th and 8th grade math and history at Pratt School from 1969-1973. For the next 34 years, he worked diligently at the Social Security Administration, helping countless individuals and families navigate the complexities of life. He retired in 2007, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and commitment to public service. OC was an active member of the Hillview Church of Christ, where he found joy being involved with Bible classes and community devotionals as a teacher and song leader, contributing generously to Benevolence and missions, and offering rides to fellow congregants, ensuring that everyone could be part of the community he cherished so dearly. His devotion to service extended beyond the church walls, as he was a Red Cross platelet donor for many years and volunteered for Meals on Wheels in Gardendale with his brother-in-law, Eddie Faser, delivering meals with a warm smile and a kind word to those in need.
He had a deep love for maps and reading, often found lost in the pages of history books, where stories of the past came alive. He enjoyed the gentle warmth of Hallmark movies, and listening to classical and international instrumental music, amassing a large collection of records and CDs. A passionate researcher of ancestry, OC spent countless hours tracing family roots, weaving together the tapestry of his lineage with care and precision.
OC was predeceased by his father, Oscar Henry Furgerson; his mother, Margaret Melvina Echols Amason; his stepfather, Marion Clyde Amason; and sister, Janelle Marie Amason. He is survived by his children, Anna Furgerson and Laura Beth Fleming (Jared); his granddaughters, Laura Evelyn and Kahlan Fleming; the mother of his children, Marlene Furgerson Templin; and his sister, Karron Faser (Edward).
Our family would like to express enormous appreciation and gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital CVICU, for your professional and loving care of OC and all of us. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in OC's memory to Central Alabama Meals on Wheels, an organization close to his heart. Please send a meal in memory of OC.
