Orville “Jim” Dow Whitt, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on December 12, 1933, in Portsmouth, Ohio, Jim was the cherished son of Leslie and Ina Whitt. He embodied a life marked by service, devotion, and love, leaving behind a legacy that will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Jim grew up in Portsmouth, where he developed a keen sense of community and a deep love for his family. He was a proud alumnus of Clay High School, where he formed many lifelong friendships and demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for learning and leadership. His early years laid the foundation for the compassionate and principled man he would become.
With a strong sense of duty to his country, Jim served in the United States Air Force for three years during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His service was characterized by bravery and dedication, and he carried the values learned in the military throughout his life. His stories of camaraderie and resilience continue to inspire his family and friends.
After completing his service, Jim returned to Ohio, where he met the love of his life, Priscilla. Together, they built a beautiful life over the course of 66 wonderful years of marriage. Their bond was a testament to enduring love and partnership, serving as a guiding light to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Jim was the proud father of three children: Jimmy, Rich, and Sheryl. He instilled in them the values of integrity, hard work, and kindness. His guidance and support were unwavering, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments. Jim’s family grew to include a loving sister, Lorraine, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored and cherished.
Throughout his life, Jim was known for his warmth, humor, and generosity. He had an innate ability to make those around him feel valued and loved. His home was a gathering place for friends and family, where laughter and stories were shared, and memories were made.
Jim is predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Ina Whitt, as well as his siblings Leslie Jr., Curtis, Evelina, and Blackie. He held them close in his heart and often spoke of the fond memories they shared.
As we say goodbye to Jim, we remember a man who lived a full and meaningful life, enriched by the love of his family and friends. His legacy will be carried forward by those he leaves behind, ensuring that his spirit continues to touch the lives of future generations.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a date to be announced, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory and share stories of the remarkable man he was. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Jim’s memory.
Jim will be dearly missed but never forgotten, as his love and wisdom continue to guide those who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace, knowing he made a profound impact on this world.
