It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Olivia Cole on May 31, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on May 28, 1941, in Mobile, Alabama, Olivia was the cherished daughter of the late Frank and Lillian Merrills. She was a beloved sister, a devoted aunt, and a treasured friend to many.
Olivia was preceded in death by her loving parents and siblings Dorothy P. Duffin (Earl), Elijah Benjamin Merrills (Berthell), and Joe Frank Merrills (Jeanette). She is survived by her three loving sisters, Martha Slaughter (William), Vivian E. Merrill’s-Hampton (Charles), and Essie M. Crawford (Howard), as well as three brothers, Willie H. Merrills (Shirley), James M. Merrills (LaSonia), and Lavon C. Merrills (Kitty). Olivia leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, including great-great-nieces and nephews, along with many other relatives and dear friends who will continue to cherish her memory.
Olivia graduated from Conecuh County Training School in Evergreen, Alabama. Her entrepreneurial spirit was evident in the range of businesses she successfully ran, from selling plastic covers and art to owning a cleaning service. She worked diligently until her health no longer permitted it. Olivia's commitment to her community was most profoundly felt through her active membership at Cannon Temple Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully for over 30 years as an usher, Sunday School Superintendent, and teacher. Her faith and dedication to service were cornerstones of her life.
Family and friends are invited to attend a service to honor Olivia’s life on June 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home, located at 63 East 79th Street, Chicago, Illinois. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the kind words, cards, acknowledgments, and support during this time of mourning.
Olivia’s warmth, resilience, and unwavering faith touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love and service will continue to inspire those she leaves behind. May she rest in eternal peace, forever loved and always remembered.
