Ofelia Hernandez
October 6, 1936 — October 6, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Ofelia Hernandez, a cherished soul who touched the lives of many with her warmth and kindness. Ofelia was born on October 6, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas, and on her 90th birthday, October 6, 2026, she peacefully departed this world, leaving behind a legacy of love and joy.
Ofelia was the beloved daughter of the late Maria Luisa Hernandez and Jose A. Hernandez Sr. She was predeceased by her brother, Hector Garcia, and sister, Juanita Maldonado. Ofelia's spirit will continue to thrive in the lives of her surviving family members: her siblings Jose Hernandez and his wife Mary, Alvin Hernandez and his wife Terry, Amy Grundy and her husband David, and her sister-in-law Mary Ann Garcia. She is also fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, all of whom she adored and cherished.
Having graduated from Brownsville High School in 1955, Ofelia spent her life deeply rooted in the community she loved. A devout Catholic, she attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, St. Mary's Catholic Church, and was a dedicated parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Ofelia's faith was central to her life, and she found solace in offering daily prayers to the Virgen of San Juan and Padre Pio, seeking their blessings and protection.
Ofelia's vibrant personality shone through in her love for music, dancing, and celebration. She was known for her meticulously planned birthday gatherings and her enthusiasm for the annual Charro Days festivities. An avid reader, Ofelia delighted in novels by Danielle Steele and the pages of the Brownsville Herald. Her favorite spot for breakfast was Mi Torito Restaurant, where she enjoyed the camaraderie of the staff and patrons, always greeting friends with a warm smile and a kind word.
Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Ofelia knew of her fondness for the color red, a reflection of her passionate and lively spirit. Her presence brought joy to those around her, and she lived her life with a grace and generosity that will be dearly missed.
A service to honor and celebrate Ofelia's life will be held on October 14, 2026, at 4:00 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Buena Vista, located at 125 McDavitt Blvd., Brownsville, TX 78521. The family graciously requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice, honoring Ofelia's generous spirit.
The Hernandez family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Valley Baptist Memorial Hospital in Brownsville and Harlingen for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time. Ofelia's legacy of love and kindness will forever be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family of Ofelia Hernandez welcomes donations to a charity, nonprofit, church, or organization of your choosing.
