Odis Marvin Echols
June 24, 1938 — May 29, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the peaceful passing of Odis Marvin Echols, who left this world on May 29, 2026. Born on June 24, 1938, in Rusk, Texas, Odis lived a life filled with laughter, love, and dedication to those around him. He was 87 years old.
Odis was the cherished son of Marvin and Nola Echols and grew up in the embrace of a loving family alongside his siblings, Patricia Haddock, Mina Harris, Francis Mangiafico, and Charles Echols. Although predeceased by his parents, sister Francis, and brother Charles, Odis's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
In November of 1958, Odis married his lifelong companion, Carol Echols. Together, they built a beautiful life grounded in love and mutual respect, welcoming two sons, Mike and Mark, into their family. Odis's dedication to his family was unparalleled, and he reveled in the joy of his five grandchildren—Sean, Ryan, J.T., Collin, and Samantha—as well as his four great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his later years.
Odis's journey through education began at Rusk High School, where he graduated in May 1956, followed by his pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Education from Stephen F. Austin in May 1961. Armed with his degree, he embarked on a 33-year career as a teacher and coach, predominantly focusing on football. His passion for teaching and coaching was unmatched, and he left a lasting impact on countless students and athletes, inspiring them to strive for excellence both on and off the field.
Outside the classroom, Odis found joy in nature. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, often returning from his adventures with stories that could light up a room. A man of many interests, Odis also took pride in breeding Boxers and had an impressive knack for collecting a variety of items. Despite the challenges he faced, including the loss of his leg, Odis never lost his sense of humor. He was known for his quick wit and ability to find humor in any situation, often using his prosthetic leg to elicit laughter from friends and family alike.
Odis's life was a testament to resilience, joy, and love. He adored his great-grandbabies and was always ready with a joke to lighten the mood. His warmth and playful spirit were contagious, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Odis Marvin Echols will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Carol, his sons Mike (Linda) and Mark (Karen), his sisters Patricia and Mina, and all those whose lives he touched. As we remember him, let us celebrate the life of a man who lived fully, laughed heartily, and loved unconditionally.
A celebration of Odis's life will be held in the coming days, where family and friends will gather to honor a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to a charity of your choice, spreading the kindness and generosity that Odis embodied throughout his life.
Rest in peace, dear Odis. You will forever be in our hearts.
