It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Norman Weddle Holmes, who peacefully departed this life on June 13, 2026, at his home. Born on April 11, 1950, in Hustle, Virginia, Norman was the cherished son of the late Herbert and Estelle Holmes.
Norman's journey began in Essex County, where he received his education through the public school system. From a young age, he was a devoted member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, a spiritual foundation that remained a cornerstone throughout his life.
A man of immense discipline and dedication, Norman carved out a successful career as an independent owner-operator truck driver. His work was more than just a profession; it was a testament to his strong work ethic, determination, and independence. His reputation as a reliable and committed professional preceded him, earning the respect and admiration of many.
Outside of his career, Norman's true passion lay in automobiles. He found joy and fulfillment in repairing, restoring, racing, and driving cars. It was not just a hobby but a lifelong enthusiasm that saw him spend countless hours in the garage, lovingly tending to engines and all things related to cars.
Norman was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Herbert and Estelle Holmes; his brothers, Herbert Holmes Jr., Charles Holmes, Nathan Holmes, and Andrew Holmes Sr.; and his sisters, Mary Holmes, Gladys Berry, Susie Lewis, and Antonette Holmes-Pompey. Despite these profound losses, his spirit remained unyielding and his heart open.
He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his devoted daughter, Takeisha Holmes of Essex County, Virginia; his sisters-in-law, Vernell Holmes and Jean Holmes; numerous dedicated nephews and nieces; along with a host of other relatives and dear friends. Norman's legacy is one of love, resilience, and kindness—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Norman's life will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 2548 Hustle Road, Hustle, VA 22436. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather in remembrance of Norman, to share stories, and to honor the legacy of a remarkable father, family man, and friend.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the many expressions of sympathy and thoughtfulness during this difficult time. Your kindness is deeply appreciated and will always be remembered by the family.

The 23rd Psalm
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
for ever.
