It is with deep sadness and a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Noble R. Thigpen Jr., affectionately known to family and friends as "Nick," who left this world peacefully on April 18, 2026, just six days after his 100th birthday. Nick was born in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, on April 12, 1926, to the late Noble R. Thigpen Sr. and Ella Mae Johnson, who undoubtedly instilled in him the values and strength that would guide him throughout his remarkable life.
Nick's journey of learning and exploration began at Martha Ruggles Elementary School and continued at Chicago Vocational High School (CVS), where he laid the foundation for a lifetime of achievement and service. He furthered his education at George Williams College in Downers Grove, Illinois, earning a bachelor's degree in Physical Education. His passion for teaching extended into areas like water safety and scuba instruction, where his dedication inspired many to pursue their own adventures and skills.
A proud patriot, Nick served his country with honor as a member of the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1966. His time in the service was marked by a commitment to duty and camaraderie, which he carried with him throughout his life.
Nick's professional life was equally distinguished. He began his career at the Hyde Park YMCA in Chicago, Illinois, where his love for sports and mentoring shone brightly as he coached Pop Warner football teams, including the Rams and the South Shore Colts. His dynamic personality and business acumen led him to Honeywell Incorporated, where he began as a door-to-door salesman and rose to the esteemed position of Vice President of Sales Management before retiring in 2001.
Beyond his career, Nick was a dedicated and active member of the Greater Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Kappa Alpha Kappa Graduate Chapter in Minnesota. His faith and fraternity were cornerstones of his life, and he found great joy and purpose in fellowship and service.
In his leisure time, Nick could often be found on the sidelines, refereeing or coaching youth sports, a testament to his enduring love for nurturing young talent and fostering team spirit. His enthusiasm for sports was infectious, and he touched countless lives with his encouragement and guidance.
Nick was predeceased by many beloved family members, including his parents, Noble R. Thigpen Sr. and Ella Mae Johnson Thigpen; his son, Alfred Brien Thigpen; his sister, Elaine Maria Thigpen; his brother, James E. Thompson; and his wives, Virginia Morris and Lillie M.
