It is with profound sadness yet gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of our beloved Noble R. Thigpen Jr., affectionately known as "Nick," who departed this life on April 18, 2026, just a few days after his 100th birthday. Born in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, on April 12, 2026, Nick's journey was one of dedication, service, and love.
Nick was the cherished son of the late Noble R. Thigpen Sr. and Ella Mae Johnson, who preceded him in death alongside a host of dear family members, including his son Alfred Brien Thigpen, sister Elaine Maria Thigpen, brother James E. Thompson, and many more who now welcome him into eternal peace. He was a beacon of strength and joy to those around him, leaving an indelible mark on every life he touched.
From the halls of Martha Ruggles Elementary School to the corridors of Chicago Vocational High School (CVS), Nick's educational pursuits laid the foundation for a lifetime of learning and teaching. His passion for physical education led him to George Williams College in Downers Grove, Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor's degree, furthering his commitment to the field as a Water Safety and Scuba Instructor.
Nick's sense of duty and patriotism was exemplified through his service in the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1966, where he served his country with honor. Following his military service, Nick's career took flight at the Hyde Park YMCA in Chicago, Illinois, where he was a revered program director, coaching the Rams and the South Shore Colts in Pop Warner football. His charisma and leadership were undeniable, eventually leading him to Honeywell Incorporated, where he began as a door-to-door salesman and retired as Vice President of Sales Management in 2001.
A man of faith and community, Nick was an active member of Greater Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His fraternity, Kappa Alpha Kappa Graduate Chapter, also benefited from his boundless energy and commitment. Whether refereeing or coaching youth sports, Nick's presence was always felt and cherished by those who knew him.
Nick’s legacy is one of perseverance, love, and kindness. His family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support and kind words during this time of grief. Although he has left this earthly realm, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched.
Noble R. Thigpen Jr. will be dearly missed but never forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace, reunited with those he loved and lost, forever watching over us with a gentle smile.
