Nina P. Lewis
August 20, 1932 — July 25, 2026
Ms. Nina Phyllis "Little Booger" Lewis, born on August 20, 1932, to the union of Richard Lewis and Mary E. Rayborn, in St. Louis, Missouri. Nina left this world peacefully at home on July 25, 2026. A devoted wife, godmother, godgrandmother, aunt and friend. Nina was preceded in death by her husband, William D. Rice, her parents, sister Mary and Babe her pet dog. Nina's life was a testament to love, compassion, resilience, service and unwavering faith.
Nina was a gentle soul whose kindness touched everyone she met. Her early years in St. Louis were filled with family, friends, and the beginnings of her lifelong commitment to helping those in need. As a young woman, she was known for her intelligence, grace, and determination—qualities that she carried throughout her entire life.
Nina's warmth and generosity touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Lincoln University, followed by a Master of Education and an Advanced Certificate from the University of Illinois. A dedicated teacher and counselor for over 30 years with the St. Louis Board of Education, her passion for education inspired countless students, leaving an indelible mark on their lives. Little to be known, Nina also attended Forest Park Community College and earned her certification to become an emergency medical technician (EMT). During the summers, she worked in the emergency rooms at St. Louis County and St. Louis City hospitals.
Nina graduated from Sumner High School, Class of January 1948 and retired as a guidiance counselor from SHS in 1997. Her commitment extended beyond the classroom as she actively participated in her community and church, where she was known for her gentle appointed guidance and strong nurturing spirit.
Nina will be remembered for her love of Edcation and Service. Upon her instruction her remains were donated to The Saint Louis University School of Medicine. “Even in death she continues to teach”. Her legacy of love and learning will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
Nina was deeply committed to her faith and her community, a devotion that was reflected in her longstanding membership at St. Phillips Evangelical Lutheran Church. Her contributions to the church were numerous, as she volunteered her time and resources to support various community initiatives. St. Philip's honored Nina in 2023 at their 96 years Anniversary Celebration. Nina's legacy of love, service, and unwavering dedication to St. Philip's and their community shone brightly as the community gathered to honor her. It was a moment of profound gratitude. Her legacy of love and service will continue to inspire those who knew her.
Nina's greatest joy was her Sumner High School Family and Friends. She cherished every moment spent with them. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth and laughter, a place where all were welcome. Her SHS Family, Neighbors and Friends will forever hold dear the memories of her gentle guidance, wise counsel, and unconditional love.
She is survived by her cherished Godchildren, and her beloved Godgrandchildren, niece Dorothy M. Squires (Edmond), great nieces (Lynn and Jody), great nephew (Troy), The Sumner High classes of the 70’, 80’, 90’, great neighbors and great friends.
Nina P. Lewis will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
In addition to her family and faith, Nina had a passion for education. She believed in the power of learning to transform lives and was a strong advocate for educational opportunities for all. In honor of her commitment to education, she kindly requests that donations be made to the Nina P.
