Neva Jane Hill

October 27, 1929 — July 20, 2026

Neva Jane Hill, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 20, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on October 27, 1929, in Galien, Michigan, Neva was the cherished daughter of Alvin and Mary (Whaley) Shearer. Her early years were spent in the warmth of a loving family and community, shaping her into the remarkable woman we celebrate today. Neva's life was a testament to love, dedication, and community spirit. She was united in marriage to Robert Dean Hill on August 14, 1948, a partnership that flourished for nearly 56 years until Robert's passing. Together, they built a life filled with love and commitment, exemplified by their volunteer work for the Aid Association for Lutherans and the Lutheran Hour. Education was an important chapter in Neva's life. She graduated from Albion Area High School in Albion, PA, before pursuing her passion at Beauty School in Erie, PA. Her career as a beautician allowed her to bring joy and confidence to many, as she ran her own shop from the comfort of her home until her retirement. Neva's deep faith was a guiding force throughout her life. She was actively involved with Holy Trinity Lutheran Church before moving to Florida, where she became a dedicated member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church for the past two decades. Her commitment to her faith community was unwavering, and she found joy and purpose in these spiritual homes. Beyond her professional and spiritual endeavors, Neva had a rich array of interests. In Pennsylvania, she was a proud member of the Garden Club, where she indulged her love for arranging flowers. Her creativity also extended to the Doll Club in Erie, PA, where she shared her passion with fellow enthusiasts. After relocating to Lutheran Haven in Oviedo, FL, Neva became a vibrant part of the community, leading the craft area of the semiannual flea market. Neva was known for her impish smile and her kind heart, traits that endeared her to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Even as she faced the challenges of memory care, her spirit remained unbroken, and she continued to enjoy walks around her community, sharing her warmth with everyone she encountered. Neva was predeceased by her loving husband, Robert Dean Hill; her father, Alvin Shearer; her mother, Mary Elvira Whaley Shearer Newlon; her step-father, Cecil Newlon; and her brother, Richard A. Shearer. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her surviving family: her devoted daughter, Valaina Maher; her brother, Robert Shearer; her grandson, Ant Walach and his partner Rita Kaminsky; her cousin, Valania Niemla, and her husband John; and her nieces, Mary Rogers, Nancy Gliko, and Carol Keaton, along with their families. A service to honor Neva's life will be held on July 30, 2026, at 2:00 PM at St. Luke's Lutheran Church Chapel, located at 2021 W State Rd 426, Oviedo, FL 32765. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Lodge at Lutheran Haven for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations in Neva's memory can be made to The Lutheran Hour or The Haven Beneficial Fund, reflecting her lifelong commitment to faith and community.
